WORKSHOP THIS SUNDAY

WORKSHOP DETAILS: Acrylic on Canvas Florals Workshop, facilitated by Rachel Porter of The Starling’s Nest. Learn step-by-step blending and brush techniques to paint a vibrant, textured floral masterpiece. All skill levels are welcome. You will take home your own completed canvas ready to hang. All art supplies are provided.

CURRENT EXHIBITION - Final Days

Our current SALA Festival exhibition ‘Shut Your Eyes and See’ ends this weekend. Be sure to drop in and take a look at the array of South Australian art on display, including these featured pieces by Larissa Rogacheva, Denise Pratt and Emma Sachsse.

ART WORKSHOP TEACHER SPOTLIGHT - Rachel from The Starling’s Nest (Upcoming workshop details are at the bottom of this caption)

A BIT ABOUT RACHEL

I began The Starling’s Nest in the spring of 2023, with a desire to bring creativity to everyone, and to promote a creative lifestyle to people of all ages and abilities, in an affordable and accessible way, allowing everyone to be able to spread their wings artistically. Classes began humbly around my kitchen table, with only two little chickadees in the nest. However, word soon spread and two hatched into a few more. Soon enough, we had to move to a larger nest and so The Starling’s Nest was born!

I now offer classes three nights a week after school for kids between the ages of 6 and 16 and adults, with workshops held during the week and on weekends, both at my home studio and at other venues and galleries. I also cater for participants of the NDIS, offering tailored art sessions to support their individual requirements. I have also worked in the Community Services sector for my entire career in management positions and also as a youth worker. This has allowed me to be able to marry and enrich the experience working with people of all backgrounds and abilities within my work as an art facilitator.

The name The Starling’s Nest was taken from the hotel my great grandparents owned in the early 1900s in England.

I have been a working artist, facilitating workshops and exhibiting in galleries and wineries since my 20’s. I studied art at Para West Adult College in the ‘90s. I have won many art awards, judged art competitions and have sold artworks to people all over the world, including America, England and Japan. I have also been featured in a number of art magazines in America and England, and had my artwork featured in SA Life magazine in August 2021.

CALL OUT FOR ENTRIES - Gawler Art Prize, October 2026

Entries are now open for South Australian artists to submit one original work across a wide range of mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, and sculpture.

With a first prize of $5,000, proudly sponsored by the Town of Gawler this acquisitive award ensures the winning artwork becomes part of the town’s cultural collection.
