Tingari Tjukurrpa is another piece by Ivan Shepherd, who is a part of the Warakurna Artists, Ngaanyatjarra Lands, and Ngaanyatjarra communities.

Ivan was a senior man and lived in Warakurna with his family. He was a much-respected leader of the community and was born in the bush near Lapaku. His work depicts secret men’s law associated with the Tingari men that travelled all over the Country to meet with the other Tingari men for business. All the young and old men camped together at lore time.

They camp and continue to meet with more men and the group grows as they move across the associated areas. These processes are governed
by strict rules, which you can see in the rigidity of the aesthetic.

Ukadatjara is named after its artist Fred Grant's birthplace. This area is sandhill country, even though Ukadatjara is actually a rock formation.

After the rain, the sandhill country blossoms with wild flowers that completely transform the area; these flowers have their own tjukurrpa story. This work denotes the larger rockhole and the movement across the region that can only be known by someone of statue and importance.

Frank Clancy of the Balgo community created this artwork titled 'Yuunbu' to show some of the country for which his father is custodian.

This country is named as Yuunby, which is named for a prominent tjumu, or soakwater. This country is located in The Great Santy Desert, south of Yagga Yagga.

In this piece, Yuunbu is the dark blue circular shape, while the remainder represents sites where people camped when in the area. The painting, like the landscape it depicts, is dominated by talis or sand dunes.

This 2008 piece by Arthur Tjatitjarra Robertson is titled Kurrpulurrpulu, which is also the name of the story of the seven sisters. ✨ Robertson is part of the Kayili Artists, Gibson Desert, and Ngaanyatjarra communities.

In the story, the sisters move and travel across the landscape and stop at water sources. A part of this story is illustrated here as it travels through the artist's birthplace Country, which is west of Wanarn at a place called Ryli.

Like many of the other artworks in this selection, the travel lines and grid structure in this piece denote the concrete knowledge systems that come with being born in the desert. πŸ‘

Merenda Fine Art Gallery is proud to display artworks by First Nations men and women. It is important to note that all art is ethically created from the communities themselves.

The term 'First Nations' recognises both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the sovereign people of our land. It differs from the similar term 'First Australians' as it recognises the many language groups as separate and unique sovereign nations. ✨

What do you see when you look at this piece by Roy Underwood titled Miramiratjara? πŸ‘

This artwork depicts how water is found on the sandhill and soaks. Wherever one digs, water comes to the surface. Water remains close to the surface due to the presence of many water snakes below the surface. 🐍
