Draining Rack
Ink on watercolour hot press paper
76 x 56 cm
2026
When I saw breast pumps and sippy cups drying near the sink at Maddie’s place earlier in the year, it made made me feel slightly nostalgic, but also triggered by the trauma of navigating the difficult and painful time of breastfeeding and constantly keeping baby Ila fed. It also reminds me of how much cleaning is involved in parenting. Draining Rack is a little snapshot into one of the fleeting moments of motherhood.

Matrescence
Ink on hot press watercolour paper
56 x 76 cm
2026

Matrescence is the transition into motherhood, encompassing emotional, physical, and psychological changes. Almost nine years later, I’m still feeling the whiplash of these changes. Making art about it helps me wade through a little easier, not necessarily by solving anything, but by connecting and sharing makes me appreciate how universal and relatable it is. Being a mother is beautiful and also scary, painful, and maddening all at the same time!

‘Self-Portrait After the Shower’
Ink on paper
76 x 56 cm
2026

My latest interest in painting with pigmented ink has made me lean in to its unpredictable fluidity and the range of pop colours that have simplified my colour palette. I’ve used colour to give insight into a psychological state or draw attention to certain aspects of my compositions. I recently purchased a bottle of fluorescent yellow ink with another purpose in mind. After sketching this large self-portrait, I thought about which colour might reflect my feelings lately. I’ve been struggling in my own head a lot, and I’m wrestling with past trauma, shifts in mothering and grappling with my own identity. I remembered my art history lessons at uni, hearing about the Expressionists who used yellow in skin tones to convey sickness and trauma during the world war years. I feel particularly vulnerable to my own inner turmoil when I’m in the shower, so this feels like an honest and accurate depiction of me right now, unmasked.

The Test
Watercolour and Ink on paper
56 x 75 cm
2026

Continuing with my sleeping series, this work is a culmination of elements that encapsulate the life of an Artist/ Mother. It’s a disrupted painting where the marks on the paper show fragments of my day-to-day spanning over eight years. This is a full sheet of watercolour paper that I used on and off as a tester sheet around its edges for several past watercolour portraits. There’s even a small section in the top corner where I’ve answered the phone mid-painting to jot down notes about an upcoming pest inspection at our rental. I thought after I had used up all of the edges that it would make an interesting frame for an artwork in the centre, one day.
Cut to yesterday, where I had the incredible pleasure of meeting up with my dear art pals .lee for a full day of art making, critique and encouragement, and just a good laugh and catch up! I completed the final element of this work while sitting around the studio table with my friends as they made collages and drawings of boats; I resolved to making the line drawing of baby Ila and me resting in bed after a rough night of stops and starts, through the fatigue.

After the Swimming Lesson
Ink on paper
48 x 38 cm
2026

Another from my sleeping series, this painting references a photo taken by my husband upon returning home from work in December 2018. I hadn’t managed to change out of my swimwear yet and the top half of my clothes were still soaking wet. Ila reclines in my arms like a tiny bodybuilder, without a care in the world, watching television, letting me rest.

There was a night last week, after a long day of painting lots of details for my last painting, where I simply could not fall asleep. My mind kept trying to finish the painting, followed by thinking about what to paint after it was complete. This went on for hours. Quite ironically, I decided to get out of bed, take out my laptop to go back through all of my photos since becoming a mother, and start moving photos I’d came across of me sleeping/ passed out into an album, with the thought of making a series of loose ink paintings based on them.

The first one I chose to paint from the album was one from an afternoon in 2021, and I recall that Ila (age 4) had taken this photo, before doing a photoshoot of her little feet walking down the hallway, and finishing her spree with my phone with several selfies looking up her nostrils!

The flip side of my experience of mothering, working part time jobs, and homemaking, is the fatigue of doing it all, all of the time. I often get to a point of complete exhaustion by the afternoon and either my husband, or my daughter notices it and decides that it needs to be documented. So not only is my ‘women at work’ project a series about the invisible and undervalued labour that women do, but also the toll it takes.
