‘Piano Practice’
Winsor & Newton Watercolour on Arches aquarelle paper
56 x 70 cm

Just outside my studio at City of Stirling Osborne Community Hub sits this community piano. On a daily basis I am treated to some beautiful piano playing. Occasionally I can’t help but stop, drop my paintbrush and go outside to see who is making such an amazing sound. This painting is about one of those times. It was a recent Friday morning after Chinese toddler story time, and a small group of mums and children were milling around the piano while one mum played from her own sheet music. She was playing Bohemian Rhapsody, and I just couldn’t help but want to recreate this moment of the mother and children so a snapped a quick photo. Afterwards, I introduced myself and welcomed the group to my studio to share what this strange woman was up to 🤭

I chose to paint this one in full colour watercolour to challenge myself in my skills in painting reflections, textures and colour contrasts. Let me know how you think I did!

This painting is based on a photo my husband Peter took of my daughter, Ila, and I, back in December 2021, as we were looking up at the stars while in a Perth hotel pool. I remember the pool water was unusually hot, the chlorine was very strong and the night air so thick from the recently-set summer sun. It was a time when we still had to wear masks outdoors as per COVID rules, so parenting an excited four year old on holidays in these conditions was a lot. I spent most of the trip playing in the pool with Ila as Peter watched on with a book or phone in hand, as he battled a chlorine allergy. I fantasised about a solo holiday after this one! Peter must have recognised this as a nice moment to capture of our trip, as it appears to be a serene moment of bliss. However, there are so many ways that my memory takes me to discomfort, fatigue, extraneous labour, but in the same moment, remembering Ila’s giggles, her first confident solo swims and the joyful time we had in that pool.

This residency has given me the space and time to push my technique and sense of scale in ways that I’m so grateful for.

One of my favourite parts of my week at the studio City of Stirling Osborne Community Hub is joining the group for story time with librarian Jenny. I’m starting to take my studies to a larger scale in order to give attention to all of the details, as I enjoy drawing the various expressions and posses of each mother and child when enjoying the story of the day. This artwork is also an experiment in how far I can take the material I’ve chosen - my new obsession is Derwent inktense pencils!

I’m really enjoying immersing myself in the goings on City of Stirling Osborne community Hub! Today I joined in on Rhymetime for parents and babies, and it reminded me of the importance of these programs to new parents so they can form important connections with their babies, but also their fellow mums who are in the trenches alongside them. Its a huge turnout and Program officer, Heather, is a star, as she gets everyone singing and dancing to all of the classic nursery rhymes we know and love. Here are a couple of quick sketches I’ve made of mums and grandma’s I’ve observed, in preparation for a larger painting.

When someone comes to me with a portrait commission idea, I am always so grateful to be asked! I take their beautiful idea, handle it with all of my care and consideration, use my watercolour know-how, and give it my absolute best to make a potential future heirloom. Thank you for commissioning me to make this A3 portrait as a gift for parents-in-law Lynnette and Clive, and for giving me the chance to practice painting the picturesque Horizontal Falls!
