Artists need more than a place to work, they need the freedom to experiment, the capacity to take risks, and the space to transform ambitious ideas into works that shape culture.

At Northshore, our studios create space for artists like Yuggera-Yugggerabul and Biri artist Jody Rallah to deepen their practice, weaving together Country, memory, and intergenerational knowledge to create works that resonate far beyond the studio walls.

With the generous support of Blaklash, we’re proud to provide this dedicated studio for a First Nations artist.

This EOFY, help us continue investing in artists and the future of Outer Space. Every donation over $2 is tax deductible.

"TEN" was a powerful reminder that artists don't just make work, they shape culture, preserve histories, and imagine new futures.

For ten years, Outer Space has created the conditions for artists to take risks, build community, and make ambitious work possible. With your support, we can continue this work for the next ten.

As we reach EOFY, we're asking you to invest in the future of artist-led practice. If TEN moved you, consider giving back.

Every donation over $2 is tax deductible.

We're already 10KM in.

On Friday night, the treadmill in "Symbiotic Marathon" by Merinda Davies never stopped. Powered by the community, it moved continuously through the night, illuminating the lights that sustain the living plants at the heart of the exhibition.

It's a simple proposition with urgent implications: ecological endurance depends on collective action. The work asks us to consider how care is maintained, not through a single grand gesture, but through many small acts of participation over time.

As "Aerobic (Instructions for breathing)" reminds us, "breathing is a communal act, and running requires the self to dissolve. Earthlings are stitched together in this shared membrane. Born as one, bound as one, breathing as one, recycled as one."

The marathon is not about reaching a finish line. It is an ongoing practice of showing up, sharing responsibility and discovering how we might thrive together, rather than merely survive. Or, in the words of the text, to "turn your breath into an instrument of time, resuscitating the future with every gasp."

Join the marathon Wednesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm until 18 July. Audiences are invited to step onto the treadmill and become part of the work. Enclosed shoes are required.

We’re pleased to welcome Rachael Selleck and Cottingham Geno to the Outer Space Board.

Bringing extensive experience across finance, governance, strategy and cultural development, Rachael and Cottingham join Outer Space at an exciting moment as we build on a decade of supporting artists and shaping the next ten years of the organisation.

As we welcome new voices to the Board, we also extend our sincere thanks to our outgoing board members Brierly Broad, Lauren Kelly & Amelia McLeish for their time, commitment and dedication to progressing Outer Space. Their contribution has been instrumental in strengthening the organisation and supporting our community of artists over many years.

We look forward to the insight, expertise and care Rachael and Cottingham will bring as we continue to champion ambitious contemporary art and support the next generation of artists.

This week sprawled across the facade is Christopher Bassi, “Grow” (2020), returning as part of “TEN”.

Bringing together works from artists across the Outer Space community over the last decade, “TEN” traces personal and collective histories through memory, identity, place and belonging.

An Australian artist of Meriam, Yupungathi and British descent, Bassi’s practice uses the language of painting to explore cultural identity, alternative genealogies, counter-narratives and speculation. “Grow” reflects on these themes through a striking visual presence that transforms the corner of Brunswick and Berwick Streets each night.

View “Grow” from 5:30pm-11:30pm nightly, until 12 June.

Documentation: Cian Sanders.

Lace up and join us next week for the opening of “Symbiotic Marathon”, a new exhibition by Merinda Davies.

“Symbiotic Marathon” is an exercise program for the future.

Set within a near future where breathable air can no longer be taken for granted, for humans or plants alike, the work trains participants to attune to the mutual dependencies that sustain life. It asks: Who will breathe for us when the air grows too thick? How might shared breath, exertion and intimacy with plants reshape our understanding of ecological kinship?

Running becomes more than exercise. Participants are invited to move not in pursuit of fitness or escape, but as a practice of reciprocity, care and mutual survival.

📅 Opening Night: Friday 12 June, 6pm-9pm
Free entry, all are welcome.

This week sprawled across the facade is Lucy Nguyễn-Hunt’s things I can’t say / những điều tôi không thể nói (2021), returning as part of TEN.

Bringing together works from artists in the Outer Space community from the last decade, the exhibition traces histories, captures moments in time, and speaks to the complexities of identity, memory, and belonging.

Lucy Nguyễn-Hunt, an interdisciplinary Vietnamese and Samoan/Cook Islander Australian artist with an abiding passion for sharing lived experiences through a cultural dialogue, shares “I outed myself to my mother through my own very ~gay~ art on Brunswick street, and when I was met with the opposite of “I love you no matter what”, I felt the pain so strongly it broke the fake ID I had assumed for so long. The colonial binaries of memory forbid me from perceiving the event or what it truly was; healing and heart-breaking. When I think of location through a q***r lens, I think of the duality of q***r trauma and affirmation that can exist within a space; an experience that is liminal and not always, but sometimes complicated. things I can’t say / những điều tôi không thể nói sees Vietnamese signage and store fronts as a façade, but also barriers and thresholds. A facade of glimmering neon desire is barricaded by Vietnamese/English reflections and sentiments, as well as questions posed in the past. As an intersectional identity existing somewhere between Australia and across oceans, I lack the words to express my true self or describe q***r experiences in my mother’s tongue. What implications does this create in self-expression, validation, and belonging?”

Visible nightly from 5:30PM-11:30PM until 4 June 📍 420 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley QLD 4006

Last week, we celebrated ten years of Outer Space the only way we know how: together. Floating down the river surrounded by light, sound, silver shimmer, old friends, new faces, performances, conversations, dancing, reflections, and the kind of moments that only exist for a night before becoming memory.

LUMINOUS TEN reminded us that Outer Space has never just been a place, it’s a community built through experimentation, generosity, risk-taking, and the artists who continue to shape it. Ten years of creating room for each other, and still expanding.

To everyone who came aboard and made the night what it was: thank you 🪩

And if you missed the boat party, there’s still time to celebrate and commemorate with us.

Join us for the closing event of TEN on Friday 5 June, 6-9pm at the gallery. An exhibition reflecting on identity, memory, belonging, and the artists and communities who continue to champion contemporary art and culture.
