A Terrain of Absence, 2026Drypoint print on cotton rag “A Terrain of Absence sits within an ongoing investigation into landscape as a site where memory, history, and inscription accumulate over time. The image is constructed from thousands of cruciform marks/gestures that move between index and symbol, suggesting acts of counting, burial, or quiet witnessing. In aggregation, they form a field that is at once dense and depleted. Informed by post-apocalyptic cinema, the work considers the condition of “after”: when systems of meaning recede and only traces remain.The landscape becomes a surface of registration rather than description, where repetition operates as both labour and erosion. The crosses function as a restrained visual language of residue, engaging questions of colonial imprint, displacement, and the instability of permanence.Within my broader practice, the work extends a concern with scale, duration, and silence, where accumulation becomes a means of holding absence.”
