Postcards from Central Australia

Nikon F80 | Kodak Gold

Wandering through Uluru and Kata Tjuta was a privilege I'll never forget.

The colours and ethereal atmosphere surrounding this sacred place are unmatched, despite its popularity. It's the kind of place that never quite feels like you've had enough time to take it all in.

The scale of these rock formations was difficult to comprehend, but it made it completely understandable why they have been used as places of ceremony, culture, and refuge for thousands of years.

The rock that forms Uluru is sandstone, created from the erosion of a mountain range once thought to have been as large as the Himalayas. Vast amounts of sediment were carried by ancient rivers and waterways and deposited into a single basin. Over millions of years, the sediment was compressed beneath an inland sea and gradually hardened into sandstone.
Later, tectonic forces tilted the rock by almost 80°, which is why the sedimentary layers are now almost vertical instead of horizontal. Around 300 million years of wind and rain then sculpted the landscape into the remarkable formation we know today as Uluru.

Port Campbell, The Great Ocean Road.

Nikon 80 | Kodak Gold

Three months back home in the UK now. Back to the factory, the commute, the same conversations.

I can’t help but think about the quiet days. The nowhere to be days. The endless unknown left to explore. That’s what I miss the most.

Meeting people from every corner of the world. All ending up in the same small corner of a continent. Driven by the feeling that there must be more.

Film in the Flinders
Nikon F80 | Kodak Gold

The Flinders Ranges boasts some of the most striking outback scenery in Australia. St Mary Peak rises through the haze in the heat of the day while gorges carve deep lines across the range in Adnyamathanha Country.

Hikes like Arkaroo Rock take you past some of the region’s most important rock art sites and the stunning Wilpena Pound, telling stories that go back thousands of years. Trails through Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorge feel just as old with dry creek beds, layered cliffs, and colours that shift through beautiful sunsets and rises.

The whole place feels raw, historic, and peaceful.

We passed through at the turning of the season and the heat kept the masses away, having this overwhelming beauty to ourselves felt almost too good to be true. Although the heat was too much at times but hitting the trails early morning and in the evenings only added to its charm.

Captive Australia
Nikon F80 | Kodak Gold

Australia has some of the most incredible wildlife on Earth — some of it adorable, some of it deadly, and most of it very good at hiding.
If you know me, you know I love a zoo. Always have. Growing up on Crocodile Hunter, Deadly 60 and every BBC wildlife documentary definitely shaped me, so visiting Australia felt like stepping into those childhood dreams.

There are negative connotations around captivity, I get that — but for me, good zoos are a doorway for people who are disconnected from nature and is a reminder of what’s out there and why it matters. I’m genuinely shocked daily at the number of people who don’t have the time of day for wildlife!

While travelling we visited , and All unreal experiences — full of excitement, proper education and a few emotional moments. (I may or may not have shed a tear or two at Australia Zoo. Don’t judge.)

Seeing these animals up close has only made us more determined to see them in the wild — safely and respectfully — whenever the time is right.
And at some point in my life, I know I’ll work with wildlife, in a zoo, or in conservation. One thing at a time though, I suppose.

The last 3 shots were taken on my Samsung S21 ultra (I was in too much of a hurry to find my camera)

No bad days in Broken Hill
Nikon F80 | Kodak Gold

Broken Hill was a welcome oasis after the solitude of the outback. A higher population means fewer flies (a luxury in itself).

Being the biggest outback city in NSW, we finally got our fill of everything we’d been craving: good food, strong coffee, and a cold pint. We also found gems like Bell's Milk Bar, a place with an amazing vibe that feels like stepping into a time capsule. It’s been operating since 1892.

We visited icons like The Palace Hotel, featured in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and further into the outback we checked out the original Mad Max 2 film set — all adding to the charm of this blue-collar city.

Not to mention the beautiful Living Desert Sculptures was an amazing spot to get some golden hour snaps.

Most people living here have ties to the mines. The city moves slowly, with a strong industrial feel. When we asked a young worker at a pub what he does for fun around here, he simply shrugged and said, “Gaming.”

The magic of Mungo!
Nikon F80 | Kodak Gold

Mungo National Park NSW gave us our first taste of the outback. We had never heard of the place before a chance meeting with a girl at a party in Canberra. She gave us loads of recommendations but this one took 1st place!
Hours of seeing no one on the dirt roads and looming thunderstorms overhead made this place feel magical and dangerous!
Mungo National Park was also our first World Heritage Area we visited in Australia, known for being the location of some of the oldest human remains found in Australia, including Mungo Lady and Mungo Man, which are thought to be around 42,000 years old.

The many moods of Lennox head
Nikon F80 | Kodak Gold

I have so much love for Lennox! It made shooting so easy.
Perfect location for everyone; beaches for chilling and surfing, rainforests and lakes to hike and explore, and a nightlife just down the road in Byron.
A perfect piece of paradise I can’t wait to return to.
