What do we desire, and what do we lose?

Join us this Saturday for Catastrophe & Greed, an Artist Talk featuring Bonnie-Jean Whitlock Bonnie-jean whitlock , with artist Steven Xiao Steven Xiao .

Beginning with Bonnie’s current exhibition Hungry I’ve Fallen, we’ll explore catastrophe and greed not only as forces in the world around us, but as something that can also live within our own experiences.

We hope this will be an open conversation shaped by different perspectives, experiences and voices. Come as an artist, a visitor, or simply yourself — listen, share your thoughts and experiences, and bring your own perspective into the conversation.

olive bly

olive’s visual work is always curious & enthusiastic about form & colour. She sees her works as diagrams: diagrams which point primarily to multiplicity of intention and interpretation. Questioning our understanding of strict dichotomies, her works set out to walk tightropes of meaning, revelling in drawing connections between things which are seemingly contradictory. This approach is intimately connected to real-world dynamics: abstraction is a response to the concrete, and vice versa. By combining abstract forms with poetic, diagrammatic labels, her paintings emphasise the inseparability of dream-logic and waking life.

She is particularly interested in using recycled, found, & secondhand materials to explore modes of creation which promote more sustainable methods. In connection with direct action and community organising, she aims for her art to assist in imagining new futures which expand the horizons of the (im)possible. The works in this collection are painted on secondhand boards and canvases, to which layers of recycled newspaper, gesso, oil paint, pastel, graphite, coloured pencil, ink, solvent, and linseed oil were applied.

Raph James

Raph James creates abstract paintings shaped by line, colour, and small moments of feeling. Based in Naarm (Melbourne), her work holds fragments of personal experience — quiet pauses, bursts of emotion, and things that resist easy language. Deliberate and restrained in form, yet deeply personal in meaning, her paintings invite viewers to slow down, look closely, and engage on an emotional level.

James’ New Zealand Polynesian heritage and her lived experience as a trans woman shape how she moves through the world and naturally inform her practice. These paintings carry layered narratives of belonging, identity, and the ongoing process of becoming. For James, abstraction is not about concealment but about creating space for honesty — a way to express what exists between certainty and change.

Her practice is rooted in evolution. A single element within a work — a line, a colour relationship, a rhythm — often carries forward into another painting, and then another. Ideas are revisited, reshaped, and extended over time, with each piece carrying traces of the one before it while opening new directions. In the studio, she works slowly and with intention, drawing from the intersections where the past meets the present, where memory sits beside movement, and where emotion becomes something visible and traceable on the canvas.

Her hope is that these works not only speak from her experience, but also offer viewers a moment to breathe, to recognise themselves, and to encounter the quiet power of transformation—a reflection of the many shifting facets that make up Kaleidoscope: A million forms of you.

Red Stockroom presents a curated selection of works by Crystal Wu, Jane Farnan, Sandra Espinoza, Savaad Felich, Steven Xiao, and Vittoria Cugno — artists who have worked with Red Gallery, bringing their distinct practices together within a shared space.

Conceived as both a presentation and an introduction, the exhibition offers a way to encounter the artists through a focused selection of their work. Across different materials, approaches and visual languages, the works reflect the vibrancy of practices that have developed through the gallery’s ongoing relationships with artists.

Unlike a fixed exhibition, Red Stockroom is designed to remain active and responsive throughout its duration. All works are available for purchase and can be taken home immediately once collected.

Bonnie-jean whitlock

Bonnie-Jean Whitlock is a surrealist painter whose work considers catastrophe, longing, and the tactile body. Working across painting and textile installation, bonnie works on bedsheets and linen using dyeing and staining processes incorporating salt and wax.
