Our Friday night film is 'Wicked Little Letters', staring the sensational Olivia Coleman.
Wicked Little Letters is a British comedy-drama inspired by a real 1920s scandal in the seaside town of Littlehampton. Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), a prim, devoutly religious spinster living under her domineering father's roof, begins receiving a barrage of viciously obscene anonymous letters. Suspicion immediately falls on her neighbour, Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), a foul-mouthed, free-spirited Irish single mother with whom Edith had once been friendly before a falling-out. Rose is arrested and put on trial, but a skeptical policewoman, Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan), one of the few female officers in the force, isn't convinced of her guilt and begins her own investigation alongside a group of local women.

As the mystery unravels, the film becomes a sharp, funny examination of repression, class, gender, and small-town hypocrisy, contrasting Edith's suffocating propriety with Rose's unapologetic vulgarity. Colman and Buckley anchor the film with performances that balance broad comedy with real pathos, while the mystery plot gradually exposes uncomfortable truths about who society believes and why. Directed by Thea Sharrock, it's ultimately a comic but pointed story about women pushed to the margins finding unlikely solidarity against a rigid, judgmental establishment.

Our Friday night film is 'Grand Tour', our first Portuguese offering.

Set in 1917–18, Miguel Gomes's Grand Tour follows Edward (Gonçalo Waddington), a British colonial civil servant stationed in Rangoon, who is due to marry his fiancée Molly (Crista Alfaiate) after a seven-year long-distance engagement. As her ship arrives, panic overtakes him and he flees instead to Singapore, setting off a chase across Asia, through Bangkok, Saigon, Shanghai, and beyond. The determined Molly pursues him with unshakeable good humour. The film splits into two halves: Edward's melancholic, aimless flight, then Molly's sharper, more purposeful pursuit.

Gomes shoots the period scenes on stylised soundstages in Lisbon and Rome, while interweaving contemporary 16mm documentary footage of the real Asian locations, blurring past and present. I nspired by a passage in Somerset Maugham's travel writing, the film is part colonial-era romance, part essayistic travelogue, blending comedy, longing, and formal invention. Gomes won Best Director at Cannes 2024 for the work.

Satellite Boy

Our June film 'Anora' received some very mixed reactions from the society. Our philosophy has always been about providing an interesting selection of films and if you enjoy every one of them, we've probably failed!

To celebrate NAIDOC Week, we will be screening the 2012 film, 'Satellite Boy' staring the late David Gulpilil, directed by Catriona McKenzie and set in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Ten-year-old Pete lives with his grandfather, Jagamarra (known as "Jubbi"), in a run-down, abandoned outdoor cinema in the outback town of Wyndham. Jubbi patiently passes down traditional Aboriginal knowledge and bush skills, though Pete is more preoccupied with dreams of opening a restaurant and hoping his absent mother, Lynelle, will return from the city to help him run it.
Life is upended when a mining company moves in, claiming the land and threatening to demolish the drive-in to build a storage facility. Determined to save his grandfather's home, Pete sets off for the city with his best friend Kalmain, travelling by bicycle through the vast, unforgiving Kimberley landscape. When the boys become lost, their journey turns into a real walkabout, forcing Pete to draw on the traditional survival skills Jubbi taught him. Along the way, Pete reconnects with his mother and confronts his own sense of identity and belonging, caught between the pull of the city and his deep connection to country. The film blends coming-of-age drama with themes of cultural heritage, resilience, and the enduring bond between grandfather and grandson.

Anora

Our June film is the quirky comedy, 'Anora'. Written, directed, and edited by Sean Baker, Anora is a 2024 American romantic comedy-drama that puts a sharp, modern spin on the Cinderella fairy tale.
Anora "Ani" Mikheeva is a young st****er living in Brighton Beach, a Russian-speaking enclave in Brooklyn. As the only Russian-speaking dancer at an upscale Manhattan strip club, Ani is introduced to Ivan "Vanya" Zakharov, the spoiled and reckless son of a wealthy Russian oligarch. Ostensibly in the US to study, Vanya spends most of his time partying and playing video games in his family's Brooklyn mansion.

Vanya hires Ani for several encounters and becomes infatuated with her, eventually offering her $15,000 to stay with him for a week and pose as his girlfriend. This leads to a whirlwind romance culminating in a trip to Las Vegas, where the two impulsively wed.

Once the news reaches Russia, the fairytale is threatened as Vanya's parents dispatch his Armenian godfather Toros and his henchmen to New York to have the marriage annulled. What follows is a chaotic and darkly comic unravelling of Ani's dreams, as the brutal realities of class and power close in around her.

Fallen Leaves

Our May offering (tomorrow night) is the Finnish comedy, 'Fallen Leaves' (Kuolleet Lehdet). Written and directed by Aki Kaurismäki, Fallen Leaves is his 20th feature film and a continuation of his Proletariat series. Described by critics as a quirky tale of star-crossed lovers, it is considered a life-affirming gem — capturing both the void of loneliness and the warmth of human touch.
Ansa is single and lives in Helsinki, working a precarious zero-hours contract at a supermarket before moving to sorting recyclable plastic. One night she accidentally meets the equally lonely Holappa, an alcoholic construction worker. Their path to happiness is beset by obstacles — from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and a charming stray dog.

The two, both cocooned in loneliness, almost meet, then do meet, then can't meet, then meet again, navigating familiar complications — bad jobs, booze, and an encroaching outside world full of troubles. A backdrop of radio reports on the war in Ukraine underscores the fragility of their world, yet the film never loses its warmth.
