Sculptures in the Garden, Mudgee

Sculptures in the Garden, Mudgee Sculptures In The Garden will host its 16th annual exhibition 10th to the 25th of October 2026!

Sculptures In The Garden is an exciting event that combines garden design, Australian sculpture and traditional art mediums in beautiful rural surroundings within a private garden and vineyard in Mudgee. The inaugural Sculptures in the Garden event was held in October 2011 and attracted 130 sculptures and more than 1000 visitors over the weekend. The event now brings around 2000+ visitors to the r

egion and showcases more than 250 artist’s work. The objective for this event has always been to showcase sculpture as an artform, curate the work of some of the most interesting sculptors currently working in NSW, and engage the local community in the appreciation of – and education about – these works. When Former director of the Art Gallery of NSW and respected art scholar, Edmund Capon opened Sculptures in the Garden 2016 he expressed his view that “Sculptures in the Garden has made such a contribution to our appreciation of the art of sculpture. It is no longer the poor cousin in the story of Australian art, but a lively thriving centrepiece.”

Artistic Director Kay Norton-Knight's vision is to bring sculptures to the Mudgee region; to provide a venue for emerging artists to display and sell their work and network with other artists; and to develop public art for the benefit of the community and visitors to the Mudgee region. The SIG Committee is made up of seven local volunteers whose aim is to celebrate the work of Australian artists as well as raise money for local charity and art initiatives.

MUDGEE REGION TOURISM SMALL SCULPTURE PRIZE

Small but mighty.

The Mudgee Region Tourism Small Sculpture Prize celebrates the power of small-scale works — rewarding craftsmanship, creativity, and the ability to make a big impact in a compact form.

Perfect for emerging artists, collectors, and those who delight in the finer details, this category proves that size isn't everything.

Last year's winner, Nigel White, took out the prize with Ponytail — a silver sculpture measuring just 9cm x 1cm x 5cm, inspired by the knight from a chess board.

As Mudgee Region Tourism's Beau Kassas noted, "The Mudgee Region may be small, but we deliver big on experience."

Most sculpture prizes:
→ Private collections
SIG:
→ Public legacy

The winning work becomes part of a growing collection that celebrates sculpture in the Mid-Western Region.

Thank you to Mudgee Region Tourism for supporting this exciting category and helping grow a future Small Sculpture Trail for visitors and locals to enjoy.

A new landmark has arrived on the Lawson Park Sculpture Walk.

Jetty by Vlasé Nikoleski, winner of the 2025 Sculptures in the Garden & Mid-Western Regional Council Major Prize, has now been permanently installed along the river.

Inspired by the shimmering heat haze of the Australian landscape, the work evokes a distant horizon — a reminder of both water and its absence.

With more than 50 sculptures donated through Sculptures in the Garden, the Lawson Park Sculpture Walk continues to grow as one of the region’s most unique cultural experiences.

Take a walk, explore the collection and be sure to stop by Inland Jetty on your next visit to Mudgee.

CALL FOR ARTISTS – SCULPTURES IN THE GARDEN 2026

At the heart of Sculptures in the Garden sits the Rosby Gallery — an architect-designed rammed earth building that seamlessly connects the indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces.

Purpose-built for the presentation of art, the gallery provides an exceptional setting for smaller sculptures and intimate works. Its warm rammed earth walls, natural light and connection to the surrounding gardens create a unique exhibition environment unlike any other.

Together with the outdoor exhibition, the gallery allows Sculptures in the Garden to showcase a diverse range of sculptural practices, from monumental landscape works to finely detailed pieces designed for interior spaces.

We welcome entries from sculptors across Australia and invite submissions of works both large and small.

Artist submissions for Sculptures in the Garden 2026 are now officially open.

For artists, Sculptures in the Garden is more than an exhibition. It’s:
– Direct engagement with audiences
– Strong sales outcomes
– Valuable industry connections
– Opportunities to grow as an artist

Blue Mountains sculptor Laurent Rivory first exhibited at SIG in 2019, at a time when he had only recently begun working in steel sculpture.

“That year I exhibited alongside some of Australia’s leading sculptors… and got to pick their brains regarding techniques in steel welding as well as composition. It was amazing to be immersed in that environment as an emerging artist.”

Returning to SIG in 2020, Laurent sold all four works he exhibited.

Over the years, Laurent’s sculptural practice — often exploring themes of duality, balance, and interconnected forms — has continued to evolve, with SIG playing an important role in supporting that journey.

“My trajectory as an artist has been significantly boosted through participation at SIG.”

FERNSIDE PASTORAL COMPANY ACQUISITION PRIZE
Regional business supporting regional culture.
**Applications for this sculpture prize are now open**

Now entering its third year, the Fernside Pastoral Company Prize reflects the strength of regional communities supporting artists and investing back into public culture.

This partnership between agriculture and the arts is at the heart of what makes Sculptures in the Garden unique — local businesses helping create a lasting public art legacy for the region.

Artist John Fitzmaurice shared:
“Sculptures in the Garden elevates this event to another level with its commitment to giving back to the community by acquiring works for all to enjoy. These acquisitions, installed at Lawson Park, have also become a tourist attraction focal point.”

“With Kay’s loyal buyer-clientele base that spans far and wide, Sculptures in the Garden ensures that we artists eagerly return year after year, knowing our work will be appreciated and valued.”

As SIG continues to grow, attracting visitors from across regional NSW, Sydney, and interstate, partnerships like Fernside Pastoral Company play an important role in ensuring artists are supported and public art continues to thrive in our region.

SIG exists to:
– Support artists
– Create public art
– Leave a permanent cultural legacy
– Connect regional communities with sculpture
