Punk didn’t invent septum piercings—it just turned up about 2,000 years later, added eyeliner and made them loud again. 😌

Long before septum jewellery became an alternative-fashion staple, people across many cultures were decorating their septums for very different reasons.

One surviving gold ornament from the Salinar culture of ancient Peru dates to approximately **100 BCE–200 CE**. It was designed to hang from the septum and was likely worn as a symbol of importance, status and power. ✨

There isn’t one single origin story: depending on the culture and time period, septum jewellery has represented beauty, identity, ceremony, responsibility or social standing.

🏺 **PIERCING HISTORY: NI**LE PIERCINGS**

Alright, history goblins — this one sent me down a rabbit hole. 😂

You may have heard that ni**le piercings were all the rage with fancy Victorian women in the 1890s, who supposedly wore little gold **“bosom rings”** — sometimes even connected by delicate chains.

And there *are* Victorian-era references to ni**le jewellery. 👀

BUT...

The evidence that this was actually a widespread Victorian fashion is pretty bloody shaky.

A lot of the story we repeat today can be traced back to a handful of old magazine letters rather than solid evidence of some huge ni**le-piercing craze.

And the other story you might've heard?

⚔️ **“Roman centurions pierced their ni**les so they could attach their capes to the rings.”**

Yeahhhh... probably bu****it. 😂

That story appears to come from modern piercing folklore rather than Roman historical evidence.

Which is actually one of my favourite things about piercing history — sometimes the stories we've repeated for decades turn out to have been embellished, misunderstood or straight-up invented.

So no, ni**le piercings weren't invented by Instagram.

But apparently humans have also been spreading questionable piercing facts since LONG before Facebook existed. 😂
