LAWS – “I’M HAVING A BALL!”
The Penrite Australian Kart Championship’s “most senior ever” competitor is having a ball competing against racers younger than a quarter of his age.
Cairns Kart Racing Club President Julian Laws will contest the entire 2026 championship competing in KA3 Senior at 62 years of age, but despite the series being a major bucket-list tick, the idea was born more out necessity than a dream.
“With all the responsibilities of being a Club President, Clerk of Course and Chief Steward, I don’t get to race locally that often, so I chatted with fellow KA3 Senior Cairns racer Conner Hole and his dad Nathan, that with the demand for spots on the grid, we’re better to commit to the whole season and guarantee our spot than hoping we get a spot as a casual nomination, so we’ve pooled our resources and will do the tour together.”
Despite the logistical challenges of travelling from far North Queensland, the semi-retired go-getter will draw on decades in the equipment hire industry to make the challenge a little easier for the final two rounds.
“We’re going to bring out the Tardis,” he says with an air of mystery, referring to his custom painted metre-cubed packing container that resembles the iconic police box styled spaceship from the legendary BBC Sci-fi series.
“It’s amazing what you can fit in the Tardis. We just get it freighted to a warehouse belonging to any of my friends within close range to the round, and then just hire a Ute from the airport, go and pick up the Tardis and head to the track! Then after the round, we just do the same process in reverse, and its saves us days and days of travel,” he says proudly.
“I’m having so much fun, but doing the championship is really my wife’s idea. She can see how much I enjoy the social side of the sport and has encouraged me to get out and make it happen. So I’ve classified my entry as “Taking the pressure off the kids who fear coming last,” he laughs.
Despite having no expectations from racing results, “King Julian” currently sits 29th in the championship out of 44 drivers, and the North Queenslander is savouring the prospect of racing in familiar territory in Townsville.
7+ will once again host the live coverage of the championship on Saturday July 4 from 12:30pm and 11:30am on the Sunday. Sun City Raceway is 20 minutes west of Townsville on Shaw Road and offers free entry for spectators along with excellent amenities, and refreshments available for purchase.
