I attended an abstract painting workshop with the fabulous .art at Cairns Regional Gallery. I absolutely loved the experience, especially the challenges of creating a totally abstract piece (I still end up with a bit of figurative content no matter how hard I try not to). I met some lovely women artists and I produced a satisfactory painting. Who could ask for more?

I visited an embroiderer on Instagram who learned to sew from her grandmother when she was a child. My mum taught me to sew, but I learned embroidery in grade 4 (7 years old) at school. We used school-yellow linen and produced a sampler of many stitches by pulling threads and counting- over three under two,
etc). I became an Home Economics teacher and in my textile major, I learned and practiced many international traditional forms of embroidery including counted thread which I loved.
I taught my own kids and now I started teaching my little grandchildren. “Teach your children well…”

At my studio desk, showing messy working methods to make ad hoc art.
Many of the materials used here fall into the “waste” category. Packaging materials, art media from charity shops. Unfortunately I have used some newly sourced pens (plastic-centric) but my aim is to keep reducing reliance on new, synthetic and less environmentally sound products. Also to use the ample supplies that I have more efficiently until they can no longer be of use. I guess that’s my non-100 day project . I seem to be defining my trajectory as I go.

Wet season canefield and mountain landscape where I live. This is using Mont Marte artists colouring pencils, an unused box of 36 bought from Lifeline. They are nice and creamy with only one or two hard pencils. I tried them all in my outdated diary before using card cut from a tea box.

I’m using an outdated diary and a cut-up card tea box to experiment with my many hoarded art materials. I considered joining the 100 day project but don’t seem to be very consistent when I go public, so I’m sort of doing a 100 day project…but not! 😆🖼️📖✂️✏️🖊️…Really, I am trying to free up my art practice and use up my stashed media. I would like to send them as postcards. So if you want a postcard in your letterbox dm me and I’ll send you one. But you have to send a postcard by mail to someone to give a positive mail experience.📮

Back to school days with oil pastels. Trying to loosen up my colour use. This is an imaginary head on a frozen pizza waxy sort of card. And some of my pastels actually have mould in them and have gone quite hard with age. Maybe a bit of the self portrait in there after all???

I’m aiming for constancy of practice and trying new approaches this year. Despite collecting and trimming hundreds of boxes of food packaging, I have never drawn or painted on them. (I think because they are not acid free card). Definitely feeling new textures and a certain freedom from using recycled materials to put pencil, pen and paint on. The pencil sculpture is drawn in my TV room, from life, not a photograph, while I was watching “UK Portrait Artist of the Year”. The water colour and #12 unipin fine liner is my kitchen table. I love doing still life art. It is very personal, immediate and tells a story.

Rusty’s Bazaar live portraiture from 1986/7. I noticed that I charged $5 a portrait. When I put up my price to $10, I started to sell!!! Go figure!
But it’s no good to devalue original art because it’s a mirror of our society and ourselves. Market live illustration helped to inform my later portraits such as my court art. From little things big things grow!

I spent a productive and enjoyable arty weekend. Friday night, I sold 2 paintings at the annual “Wish You Were Here” exhibition at Crate59 in Cairns. On Saturday I took a walk along Lake Eacham drinking in the sights, sounds, and aromas of birds, reptiles, turquoise glasslike water and whispering, creaking forest giants., followed by a most refreshing swim in the iconic crater. I decided not to use my camera but committed the feelings, lines, shapes and colours to memory for future artworks. Saturday night had me shivering in the brisk Tolga winds with friends, while watching meteors flash across the night sky. On Sunday, I counted it a great success at the Kuranda Community Markets to produce several portraits as well as meet up with unexpected friends. Finished by watching Portrait Artist of the Year on ABC.
Yes! A good weekend!
