Down the road from my childhood home. This complex used to be our local corner shop and was next door to St Aiden’s Anglican Church. It has been known as Billycart for quite a number of years now and the church is a well attended orthodox Ethiopian Christian church these days.

This little drawing is made using an HB graphite pencil on a piece of packaging card- my attempts to use what is considered waste but is actually a valuable resource to take responsibility for. The digital photo emphasises my line work which is not so obvious in the real work.

Drawing from life (this sculpture was bought in Cambodia by my husband) forces the artist to closely observe details. In this instance my focus was the effects of light and shadow. I tried to keep the appearance of the beautifully carved wood by ‘Artists of Anghor’…but I added shoulders!

She depicts one of the Buddha’s assistants. Drawing her gave me an immense sense of calm and I was internally explaining my processes, concepts and life thoughts to an imaginary audience for the entire drawing.

If everyone could have the same calm our world would be a peaceful haven.

My beautiful screen-printed Delvene Cockatoo-Collins cushion became worn from over use in the sun. I gave it second life as a bag by adding African fabric, handles hand-woven (by me a long time ago) and some hoarded pompon tape. It’s my favourite bag to date!

I went to Cairns Botanical Gardens to smell Hannibal’s ‘rotten meat’ fragrance and decided to paint the magnificent Arum flower (apparently the only one flowering in captivity in the world at present). It was a beautiful subject . The only thing I couldn’t be accurate about was the white slots on the pale green. I painted dark spots. There is nothing like drawing from life to learn about structure. This flower is etched into my mind in all its magnificence.

I spent a lovely afternoon with my lovely daughter at Copperload Dam speed-capturing the lovely view that changed before our eyes as the sun set. I used water colour and daughter tackled the challenge with gouache and a different approach. As the area closes at 5.00pm, we stopped on the way down to savour the beauty of tree ferns against a vibrant sky The last photo just indicates Venus and Jupiter in alignment. A must repeat activity!

I attended an abstract painting workshop with the fabulous .art at Cairns Regional Gallery. I absolutely loved the experience, especially the challenges of creating a totally abstract piece (I still end up with a bit of figurative content no matter how hard I try not to). I met some lovely women artists and I produced a satisfactory painting. Who could ask for more?

I visited an embroiderer on Instagram who learned to sew from her grandmother when she was a child. My mum taught me to sew, but I learned embroidery in grade 4 (7 years old) at school. We used school-yellow linen and produced a sampler of many stitches by pulling threads and counting- over three under two,
etc). I became an Home Economics teacher and in my textile major, I learned and practiced many international traditional forms of embroidery including counted thread which I loved.
I taught my own kids and now I started teaching my little grandchildren. “Teach your children well…”

At my studio desk, showing messy working methods to make ad hoc art.
Many of the materials used here fall into the “waste” category. Packaging materials, art media from charity shops. Unfortunately I have used some newly sourced pens (plastic-centric) but my aim is to keep reducing reliance on new, synthetic and less environmentally sound products. Also to use the ample supplies that I have more efficiently until they can no longer be of use. I guess that’s my non-100 day project . I seem to be defining my trajectory as I go.

Wet season canefield and mountain landscape where I live. This is using Mont Marte artists colouring pencils, an unused box of 36 bought from Lifeline. They are nice and creamy with only one or two hard pencils. I tried them all in my outdated diary before using card cut from a tea box.
