Congratulations to the amazing Brian William Chatterton on receiving his appointment in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours as a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to classical music as an educator, performer and artistic director.

Brian was honoured with an OAM in 2000 for service to music and music education, particularly through the establishment and administration of Co*Opera. He also received a Centenary Medal in 2001 for service to the community, through touring opera productions to regional communities.

Sad to say, for the first time in five years we are unable to begin the new year with an Adelaide Hills Summer Music Festival.

With a mix of public and private support from 2021 to 2024, we have been able to offer a wide range of fine music programs, drawing upon masterpieces from Viennese Classicism, Romantic, Late Romantic eras and the 20th Century that have been wonderfully supported by enthusiastic audiences. Mozart and Mahler, Beethoven, Bloch, Bruckner and Bartok, Schumann, Stravinsky and Schoenberg and many others, have dotted these offerings, all presented by the best performers from South Australia and beyond.

Alas, efforts to identify funding from public and private sources for 2025 have proved fruitless……and, thus, South Australia reverts once more to the un-envied status of being the only mainland state of Australia without an ongoing, broad repertoire-based chamber orchestra…..a status that remained unchallenged after the demise of the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra in the 1990’s, until our first Summer Music Festival in 2021. UNESCO City of Music indeed!

There is a glimmer of light, however, at the end of the tunnel leading to 2026. I hope, soon, to be able to announce plans [with appropriate seed-funding] for an imaginative offering of wonderfully accessible fine music for instrumentalists and voices, drawn from the early 20th century.

Adelaide Hills Chamber Players and Co-Opera are delighted to confirm Joanna McWaters, Grace Bawden, Robert Macfarlane, Eugene Raggio, and Jeremy Tatchell as principal singers for the November 2024 season of our Pocket Tosca production. All born or living in Adelaide, and having made their mark with National and State opera companies, these magnificent mid-career artists are joining us for an exciting “pocket” rendition of Puccini’s enduring masterpiece. And, thanks to support from the SA Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society, Tan Wei Han will also join us from Taiwan as Cavaradossi, having lent his joyous vocal artistry to Co-Opera previously in 2008 and 2012. Check out the biographies of the principal singers on our website, as well as those of Macintyre Howie Reeves [Director], Joseph Ingram [Pianoforte], David Visentin [Spoletta/Sacristan] and David Perry [Angelotti]. You’ll be impressed by the rich experiences described and the high quality of the projects in which they have featured. Pocket Tosca has also been invited for two presentations in Victoria straight after the SA season.

Extremely proud of our singers preparing for POCKET MOZART: first of four performances tomorrow night [9/6] at McLaren Vale Bocce Club. The rehearsal schedule has been seriously savaged by several outbreaks of COVID, with doses of food poisoning and laryngitis thrown in to maximise disruption. But everyone has dug deep, found extra sessions to compensate for sickness and now the show is definitely ready for audiences. Don't miss out on some very fine solos and ensembles of Mozart, selections full of lyricism and mad cap comedy. Sara Lambert, Lisa Cannizzaro, Bethany Eloise, James Nicholson, Macintyre Howie Reeves and Jeremy Tatchell pave the way vocally and Joseph Ingram provides wonderful accompaniment with true Mozartian artistry. CONCERTO RHAPSODY 2024

An enchanting evening with TWO Mozart Concertos feature in these Summer concerts, our seventh regional Festival of Fine Music. Adelaide Horn virtuoso, Emma Gregan, will play the solo part in Mozart’s irresistible Horn Concerto no 3, whilst Helen Ayres [violin] and Stephen King [viola] will combine to present the famous Sinfonia Concertante, one of the most profound of all Mozart’s works for soloists and orchestra. Bryan Griffiths, music director of the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, will conduct Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, a work that never fails to excite.
