🩷🧡💛 MEET THE TEAM - Gok-Lim Finch/ Làahm Chói Wòh 💛🧡🩷

HMLA is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901. We wanted to explore and honour the many narratives that make up who we are as a community now, and think about teasing out those gaps through places like the Victoria Park Strip. There are so many stories in food, and beyond that there are so many families working together to bring places like this alive.

Làahm Chói Wòh (藍采和) is one of the Taoist eight immortals that crossed the sea. They are also nonbinary, and a patron of flowers and gardeners. Recognising myself in them has been a key moment in my awakening and coming to terms with myself as a q***r and nonbinary person that also likes flowers. And also specifically a q***r person with Cantonese and Hokkien speaking heritage.

We are looking forward to sharing this beautiful project with you all tomorrow!💛

STORYTELLER ANNOUNCEMENT 📚
At Stories of the Strip, on Friday, 26 April, we will be revealing out Vic Park community inspired artworks along with storytelling, performances and open mic.

The event will officially be opened by Skye Croeser, Councillor at the with a performance by local artist Kim Donnelly, stories by Professor Jon Stratton, long-time Vic Park resident and more!

👀 Learn more about Kim in their Artist Bio below:

Kim Donnelly is a multi-genre artist born in the vibrant melting pot of Naarm & raised in sunny small town Geraldton. Creating through the lens of mixed Filipino heritage living in Australia, Kim combines improvisational freedom with the classical refinement of her early years in music. With a current focus on indie-pop, Kim’s sonic evolution rejects the metronome, falling in love with the loose freeform of storytelling as a singer-songwriter. Now based in Boorloo, with a profound passion for indie sound, Kim’s lyrics often touch on the push and pull of emotional liberation & the impermanence of the human experience; exploring themes of love & and tender appreciation for meaning. A WAAPA graduate and multi-instrumentalist, Kim’s artistry explores the space between notes, unravelling what can be found between them - playing quiet spaces inviting listeners to gently explore their own emotional terrain, and intimate gatherings with a focus on connection & community within the Boorloo music scene.

🧠So why did we choose to do a community art project?
Art is always part of the community, even if it is our inner most thoughts being expressed. For this project, we wanted to make something in collaboration with the wider community. It's special and important to feel like you are part of something bigger. We share more commonalities than we realise and community art projects can be a tool to break down barriers and highlight that interconnected-ness.

🩷🧡💛 MEET THE TEAM - Natalie de Rozario/Nat Kadaw 💛🧡🩷

While putting this project together Gok-Lim and I contemplated what stories, myths and legends we feel connected to. I am drawn to spirits that inspire freedom, creative expression and powerful sexuality much like 'Nat Kadaw'.

In Burmese culture there are 37 'Nats' (spirits) each entwined with traditional narratives and animism of the ancient land. Nat Kadaws are Burmese Queens, mystic brides and femme-q***r baddies. And while people who are gay and/or who reject gender norms often suffer scorn and rejection by society, Nat Kadaws are esteemed as respected and influential figures in the community.

We are looking forward to sharing this beautiful project with you all next week!💛

🩷Heraldic Migration Liberation Acts (HMLA) is a community art project where local Victoria Park community members will be encouraged to make collaborative banners of heraldic imagery.

🧡The title is a play on the Immigration Restriction Act 1901 and a celebration of the many stories, myths, legends, and wonder behind our local communities and businesses. These heraldic artworks will come from community stories and conversations about hope, freedom, and connection.

💛We are inviting local businesses and communities to share stories of myth, history, and hope with us, and to collaborate on designs that include heraldic imagery and important cultural figures to explore the deeper connections between the many people that are part of the Victoria Park community.

✨️Get intouch with us today if you know any local businesses on the Victoria Park Cafe strip who would like to get involved ✨️
