Uncle Jack by Liz Moore Golding is the featured artwork on the Website and Facebook.

Selected for a Highly Commended at 112 MSWPS Annual Exhibition.

Judge, Sophie Gerhard commented:

An interesting and expressive rendering of a true legend! The dappled effect of Charles’ skin really captures his pensive expression, and the wonderful hints of blue in his wavy hair and beard give him personality, texture and movement. I particularly like the chiaroscuro background, allowing the limelight to be deservedly on his face.

is the featured artwork on the Website Homepage and Facebook.
Selected for a Highly Commended at the 112th MSWPS Annual Exhibition.
Judge, Sophie Gerhard commented: Very impressed with the technical skill displayed in this piece. I know how hard it is to work with bronze, and the patina and smooth texture you have achieved is highly impressive. I’m particularly fond of the elongated, organic lines you’ve chosen to employ.

Very excited to be part of this exhibition. I entered 3 works created during COVID. Take the time to read the words about the thought processes behind the works. Good fun.

MSWPS COVID CREATIONS Exhibition Online is an opportunity for members to show off their creativity in works achieved during historic global turbulence. As the pandemic restricted most of the Societies’ usual outings and events, the exhibition provides a showcase in recognition of the irrepressible talents of its many members. Although Covid and a series of lockdowns may have suppressed creativity in some, in others it was stimulated. Either way, MSWPS understands. The works exhibited are a tribute to its members and it is hoped that all who view them online will appreciate the determination and talents of the artists of The Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors.

FEATURED ARTIST Margaret Picken | The Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors

Smoke and Dust December “19” by Margaret Picken is the current featured artwork on The Website Homepage and page. Margaret’s painting was awarded Highly Commended at the 111th MSWPS Annual Changing Perspective exhibition, judged by Amanda Hyatt.

The judge’s comment:

In this case tone does all the work and the artist uses a reduced colour palette. The dimensions of the painting measure up into fifths horizontally and create the balance for the painting to work. There is a sense of calm, mood, atmosphere and mystery. A minimalist painting with sufficient punch to compel the viewer to look more closely at ‘ what isn’t there’. A nice piece of minimalist, realist, romantic art. ‘What isn’t there’ is as important as what is.

33: That Night....Remember | The Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors

MSWPS FEATURED ARTIST is Sylvia Isaac
At the Annual Changing Perspectives exhibition, Judge, Amanda Hyatt awarded That Night....Remember a Highly Commended.
The Judge's Comment:
It’s difficult to paint ‘night scenes’ obviously because of the lack of light. This painting captures both a sense of restricted light, mystery, intrigue (why is the bird bath important? It could have been a seat or a statue to create a similar effect) and a sense that something has gone on.
Did someone disappear stage left behind the bushes suddenly? Paintings usually work because they are ‘memorable’ and apart from the reduced and themed colour palette and the juxtaposing of different tonal values, the artist has captured a difficult ‘time of day’ painting. This is a good example of tonal Impressionism.

MSWPS FEATURED ARTIST is Lucy Fekete.
At the Annual Changing Perspectives exhibition, Judge, Anmanda Hyatt awarded Painting While Waiting by Lucy Fekete a Highly Commended.
The Judge's Comment:
A huge statement painting and an excellent piece of graphic art. One can almost feel (from experience) the level of apprehension of what is to come. A combination of technical skill in its photo realism with a complete emotional outpouring. There is only a small reference to the fact that it was painted as a mirror reflection. The design element is good and the thin transparent layering of paint suits its modern feel. I hope the artist paints the ‘after the event’ picture!

2020 Judge: Amanda Hyatt selected No. 43 Stormy Passage by Beatrice Magalotti as recipient of the MSWPS Sculpture Award Winner.
Stormy Passage is currently the Featured Artwork on the MSWPS website.

Judge’s Comment:
This section was difficult because as a sculptor myself, one who builds rather than cuts away, I understand the complexities of such work. The bronze ‘boat’ is a compilation of, please pardon my puns, what looks like a cut in half squashed up leather football stuffed with paper and tied up with barbed wire but the magic happens when the entire thing is bronzed. And suddenly it is beautiful. The artist consequently has to have a preemptive vision of what they want the final result to look like and this sculpture works well as it has a statement value of mystery, a bit of trauma and intrigue. Plus working with barbed wire is no mean feat! Well done.
