ARA DOLATIAN
𝘐𝘕 𝘉𝘌𝘛𝘞𝘌𝘌𝘕 𝘍𝘖𝘙𝘔𝘚
until 20 June

"In this exhibition, 𝘐𝘕 𝘉𝘌𝘛𝘞𝘌𝘌𝘕 𝘍𝘖𝘙𝘔𝘚, artist Ara Dolatian carries forward this ancient legacy of celebrating powerful Mesopotamian goddesses by experimenting with hybridity, animality, and monstrosity.
Inanna is the Sumerian name for Ishtar, and she is the oldest known deity in the world for which we have written evidence. The use of hybrid and animal imagery to give form to this ancient and complex deity, seen in this exhibition, is also a feature of Enheduanna’s poems of praise.
By choosing white and gold for his artworks, Dolatian wordlessly expresses the purity and hierarchy of the divine world in ancient thought. Gold is referenced repeatedly in myths about Ishtar, signalling her connection to abundance, which is a key part of her imagery. The purity of the goddess is reflected in hymns, and is connected to her identification with the morning and evening star, Venus:
Your divinity shines in the pure heavens like Nanna or Utu. Your torch lights up the heavens, turning darkness into light.
(Inana C, 4.07.3)"

FUTURE COUNTRY
COUNTRY ROAD + NGVFIRST NATIONS COMMISSIONS 2026

Yhonnie Scarce has mentored artist Carly Tarkari Dodd for the second iteration of the Country Road + NGV First Nations Commissions initiative.

This national mentorship program pairs eight emerging First Nations artists and designers with established Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creatives, presenting a unique opportunity to connect and share intergenerational knowledge and foster artistic and professional growth.

FUTURE COUNTRY celebrates land, legacy, community and cultural continuity. In response to the exhibition’s key themes of ancestral memory, re-storying, truth-telling and future-making, participating artists have created deeply personal, culturally significant and innovative works that engage Indigenous futures and envision alternative realities. Spanning weaving, photography, sculpture, possum-skin- cloak making, moving image, sound and design, the eight new commissions explore non-linear notions of time, honour intergenerational knowledge, and convey embodied and relational understandings of place.

YHONNIE SCARCE
𝘐𝘕 𝘈𝘉𝘚𝘌𝘕𝘊𝘌, 2019
ACQUIRED BY

We are thrilled to announce that The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) has acquired and permanently installed In Absence (2019), a major collaborative work by Kokatha and Nukunu artist Yhonnie Scarce, and architecture studio Edition Office. The installation will be unveiled on 13 June 2026 as part of MONA’s Festival 2026.

Originally commissioned for the National Gallery of Victoria’s Architecture Commission, and winning the Small Building Award at the Dezeen Awards, and Award for Small Project Architecture at the 2020 National Architecture Awards, In Absence is a large-scale architectural and sculptural work that challenges the colonial fiction of terra nullius.

Combining a colossal 9-meter-high timber tower with 1,600 of Scarce’s hand-blown glass bush yams, the work draws on Indigenous knowledge systems, including eel trap engineering and murnong cultivation, to foreground deep histories of design and land stewardship.

Reconceived for MONA, the installation will take on a new, site-responsive form in Hobart, embedding the work within the cultural and environmental context of Lutruwita/Tasmania.

Its presentation during Dark M**o - MONA’s internationally recognised midwinter festival - positions In Absence within a broader program exploring ritual, history, and place.

We extend our congratulations to Yhonnie and the team at Edition Office on this monumental achievement, and also to David Walsh and the team at MONA for their support of this exciting undertaking.

KEVIN CHIN
FINALIST | BAYSIDE PAINTING PRIZE 2026

Kevin Chin's 'Unwinding' 2025 has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 Bayside Painting Prize.

"In this pieced-together dream-space that only exists through painting, ‘Unwinding’ tests how landscape and architecture converge to open spaces where we can fit in. Here, the comfort of domestic interiors and the expansiveness of nature paradoxically interweave, because both connect us to feelings of safety and respite." - Kevin Chin, 2025

The Bayside Painting Prize is nationally recognised as Melbourne’s premier painting prize. The finalist exhibition brings together a broad range of artists from across Australia, both established and lesser known, whose varied approaches to the painted medium convey the breadth and diversity of painting in Australia today.

Exhibition runs 1 May – 14 June
Bayside Gallery
Brighton Town Hall, Brighton VIC

Congratulations + Good Luck Kevin! 🧡
