"The Original Mother"

The black Madonna remains surprisingly one of the most misunderstood figures in mainstream Christianity

Too often racism and ignorance obscure her true origins; her true meaning. Common theories which have been disproven but are still accepted within many locations throughout Europe say that her skin was once white but had become dark due to exposure to candle soot. As we sadly know, many icons were purposefully whitened and some representations have even been bleached where the original icon was dark skinned.

Given this frequent practice of cultural white washing, it comes as no surprise how little is known about the actual identity of this enigmatic figure.

The biggest of the thank yous goes to this absolute legend, style icon and one of my bestest friends.

I couldn't have done any of this without his support (emotional, physical and financial lol). Or without his stunning shop space.

He has put in SOOOO many hours for this exhibition to happen, and even though we're tired and our backs are aching, I couldn't be happier with what we've achieved.

So thank you for literally everything Benny. 🫶😘✨️
