Open wide and say ‘ah’!

Our hippos participate in cooperative care so keepers can monitor their health in a way that is as hands-off and stress-free as possible.

For example, a simple hand gesture from her keeper and Nile the Hippo holds her mouth open, so keepers can check her oral and dental health.

It's so we're throwing it back to the time Keeper Cait made 'donuts' for the Ring-tailed Lemurs 🍩

But don't worry - they're not real donuts! They're frozen rings of mashed sweet potato covered in vegetable puree 'icing'.

Lion bros vs ball 🦁

Teenage brothers Bahati and Jabari weren’t sure what to make of their new enrichment item to start with - but it wasn’t long before they figured out the ball and the chain holding it to the log 😅

Our keepers work hard to come up with inventive and creative ways to keep our animals’ minds and bodies active, and it’s tough to design enrichment that can stand up against the strength of a lion!

Join us for a special enrichment feed, keeper talk, and activities as we celebrate the sixth annual 🧡

The Eastern Bongo is a rare African rainforest‑dwelling antelope facing severe threats from hunting and habitat loss due to illegal logging. Sadly, it’s estimated that fewer than 100 remain in the wild.

These striking, mostly nocturnal animals are known for their long, spiralled horns and rich chestnut coats.

Taronga proudly supports the Bongo Surveillance Project, helping protect wild bongos and their habitat in Kenya, as well as supporting rangers in the Biliqo-Bulesa Conservancy who work tirelessly to safeguard wildlife.

You can help support Eastern Bongos and other African species through Beads for Wildlife. These handcrafted products provide a reliable, wildlife‑friendly income for female artists in Kenya, supporting them, their families, and vital community conservation efforts.

Everyday, our vets give wildlife second chances ❤️‍🩹🩺

From fishing hook and line injuries to orphaned possums, barbed‑wire injured gliders, stranded turtles, stunned birds and countless other native animals, Taronga’s veterinarians — with our vet nurses at their side — are there when wildlife need them most.

Every year, our Wildlife Hospital teams in Sydney and Dubbo care for around 1,500 sick, injured and orphaned native animals, providing expert treatment, compassion and the best possible chance to return home to the wild.

Beyond the hospital walls, they support conservation programs and share their skills through Taronga‑led training with vets, firefighters and wildlife rescue groups all to help build capacity to protect wildlife during emergencies, fires and floods.

Ahead of World Vet Day tomorrow, we send a huge thank you to our incredible veterinary teams for everything they do for wildlife and for our shared wild future 💚🧡

Celebrating the legends who make Taronga wild in the best way – our zoo keepers!

Taronga’s zoo keepers work 365 days a year to provide excellent husbandry and training to animals in our care, play a vital role in conservation programs, support scientific research, educate guests and spark curiosity in all ages – they do it all.

We are beyond privileged to have such passionate people on the Taronga team who dedicate their lives to provide our animals with the best care possible.

Taronga is proud to drive global conservation efforts at our accredited zoos and our incredible keepers are the heartbeat of it all 💚

Drop your favourite animal emoji in the comments to help us say thank you to the incredible humans who make magic happen every day!

Helping those who need it the most 🏥🐾

No two days are ever the same at our two Taronga Wildlife Hospitals in Sydney and Dubbo. On average, our teams treat 1,500 injured, sick or orphaned native animals each year.

This Tuesday 2 June, a generous and long-time supporter of Taronga is doubling all donations for our Wildlife Hospitals.

If you were considering donating ahead of the end of financial year - Tuesday is your day to double your impact for wildlife in need.

To donate, please head to give.taronga.org.au ❤️‍🩹
