Congratulations to Frances! Both colourful pieces have been chosen by the Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup as part of their Acquisition pieces for 2023. These pieces will be finding a home in the Donnybrook Library where they are sure to delight with their colourful and creative visual stories. These are definitely pieces best seen in person, so if you'd like to take a look at them before they're rehoused find them at The Colour Exhibition which is on until this Saturday at the Central Arcade in Donnybrook.
📚 Artist Statement | Philbert’s Favourite Book
“The theme for this exhibition (‘Colour in Small Spaces’) immediately made me think of the imagination – which could be said to reside in the comparatively small space between our ears.
Reading good books can be a fun way for children to develop their natural skills and creative thinking and observing beauty in nature, and I think it is important that we hold on to these abilities as we grow up.
This picture gives us a brief look at Philbert the Frog, reading in his favourite place. I wanted to show a fantastical manifestation of the power of imagination, so in the tree above him appear visions of the wonderful things he ‘sees’ in the story he is reading.”
📚 Artist Statement | Child with Book
“The theme for this exhibition (‘Colour In Small Spaces’) immediately made me think of human imagination – which could be said to reside in the comparatively small space between our ears. And I think there is nothing so shiny and colourful as the imagination of a child.
Children also have an ability to focus on things in nature which catch their eye –especially things which are brightly coloured. I think hanging on to that skill is good for our mental wellbeing – and it’s lots of fun.
I drew the child in this picture based on a photo of my own son when he was a toddler. We can see the objects and characters the child imagines as they read.
When I was young I loved stories such as The Wind in the Willows, The Magic Faraway Tree and any books illustrated by Fritz Baumgarten. I also love the idea of children having fun looking for tiny creatures or objects in busy pictures.
I hope to one day create an illustrated book children will love.”
