Last week before the holiday and I'm doing theatre sports for fun activities. Chinese whispers is a great drama exercise for voice control. As you can see from the picture my two furry students are enjoying the game. Let me know how you get on.

As you can see I haven't posted for quite awhile but I'm back now. I would really like to communicate with other performing arts teachers in the community and share ideas. I have started doing performing arts birthday parties - I've got my first gig on Saturday afternoon. I am so prepared with material that I'm over prepared now. I'm also a bit nervous which is really weird because I'm very comfortable standing up in front of classes of children. Sooo if anyone would like to comment it would be appreciated.

Hello, happy new year - I know, I'm a bit late but I've been busy moving house and office and now I'm into my busiy time as a Performing Arts Publisher this is the time that teachers order from us all the time and thank you teachers for doing that.
One of my amazing grandchildren started at a new school and I loved one of the activities that his performing arts teacher is working with the kids in class with. I'm not exactly stealing the activity from her I'm just acknowledging that it is a great idea.
YOGA exercises, teaching you how to move comfortablly on stage - very clever.
I'll talk to you all either tomorrow or certainly some time this week.

We've just come back from a Christmas picnic and I organised a circuit of games. I love circuits - so we can do drama games circuits.

Hi Everyone, today's activity is - family members. I talk to my class about various people in their family. Grandparents, Aunts & Uncles, cousins, brothers and sisters, parents. I ask them to pick one member that they think they can act out. I give them a little time to work out how they are going to do it and then we start performing. I know I say this all the time BUT the results are amazing and so funny (in a nice way).
Good luck.

I have a movement activity game for you today. This activity teaches observation skills. Everyone stands in a circle. Each person choses one person in the circle to watch. On go - everyone closes their eyes and strike a pose. On Open - everyone opens their eyes, focuses on the person in the circle that they chose to watch and copies their pose.

I played this fantastic game with my 9 year old grandson and my daughter on the way to school today. You chose a theme eg. dogs.
then you take turns in saying the good things and the bad things. It isn't a new exercise but it still works really well. I tried it with my class. I divided them in half - one half was the acting side and the other side was the making up the story. As each part of the story was revealed the acting side acted it out.
Here is an example - 'My dog is really big and shaggy' - negative answer - 'but he leaves his hair all over the couch'. Acting group were dogs shaking themselves and leaving hair everywhere. We laughed and laughed, it was hysterical.
Have a go and enjoy!!!

I always like to take my drama activities from things that happen in our day. Today I sat at a very long, productive meeting and at certain times I went off in a dream.
My dream was - at the beach, blue sky, warm water, medium waves coming in to body surf.
So I asked the children 'what do they dream about' and the answers were amazing - there are some really 'out there' dreams going on. I picked the best one, chose a cast and we acted it out.

Miming is another good activity for help self esteem. It is a very 'friendly' way of performing. I use this particular activity as a class activity. Everyone finds a space on the floor. Mime is getting out of bed, getting dressed, eating breakfast and cleaning teeth, all in mime. At the beginning some students find it difficult to not speak as they go through the stages of 'getting ready for school'. I call out the instructions and walk around commenting on performances and making suggestions on what might be needed to improve the mime.

One of the most exciting projects I have ever done was training children for a 'Performance of Excellence'. Fourteen children from grade 3 - 6 were chosen not necessarily for their acting ability, that was important but one girl had an amazing way of using her hands, it was quite beautiful she presented a monologue as a cat. Another grade 6 student I trained to do the death scene from Antigone a greek tragedy - she was absolutely amazing and will never know that it rated as one of the high points of my life to watch her perform. Young people have such creative ability but don't always have the right person to bring it out in them or think acting is silly - its not. I am looking for students who would like to join in a 'performance of excellence'. If interested contact me through my page.

Emotions are a great way to help children with self esteem issues. I'm going to start with 'Laughing'. Talk to your class about what makes them laugh, how they feel when they are laughing - is it a good feeling or a bad/uncomfortable feeling. See if they can remember a time when they had a really big laugh. Get them to tell the class about it and if they feel comfortable act it out, possibly choosing other children to play different characters in their story.

fairy tales are my choice for an activity today.

I chose a popular fairy tale - eg. Little Red Riding Hood, I read the story and then I ask the children to tell me 3 characters from the story that they can identify with. Normally the boys go with the wolf and the girls go with Little Red Riding Hood. I chose a number of children to give me different interpretations on how the wolf should be portrayed and do the same with Little Red Riding Hood.

In groups children present a magic show. Talk about what tricks would be good to present (they don't actually have to know how to do the tricks, they can mime) I bring my costume box with me for this activity and use my cape, top hat, magic wand, deck of cards, scarves and anything else that 'spells' magic.

Just been to assembly and saw the children presenting a rap activity. This is fantastic fun. I sit with the class and we think up a theme for the rap. It could be an excursion that they've been on or a function at the school or something connected with some of their class work. This activity requires the children to work in a group or teams it is up to them. I ask them to come back the next class with something that they've put together. I have rarely had a child not interested in this activity. Great way to get a bit of rhyme into their lives.
