Last week in Create & Make we began working on soft sculptures. Continuing along the theme of shapes, colours and abstract work our young artists drew up their patterns and then proceeded to cut these out. Then using coloured threads sewed patterns across the hessian and added various buttons and beads to their designs. This week they will be sewing the two sides together and adding the filling. We can't wait to see the final works.

~Final Days~

Don't miss your last chance to see Joy by Cathy Jenner, closing on Saturday.

Cathy Jenner is an artist based on the North West Coast of Tasmania who constructs elaborate narrative universes. Central to Cathy’s practice is an enduring sense of joy. Positioning herself as “the Producer,” Cathy adopts multiple creative roles simultaneously – director, editor, costume designer, and set builder – shifting between them as each story demands.

Her works do not resolve into a single finished film or performance. Instead, they exist as fragments of scripts, maps, storyboards, photographs, props, paintings, backdrops, sculptures and costumes.

This exhibition is part of our 2026 Little Gallery Emerging Artist Program.

Create & Make

This week our young artists got hands on with some experimental paper and wire sculpture making. Last weeks drawings were cut up and used along with wire, tape, cardboard and coloured paper to create sculptures that explored shape and movement.

Using cardboard as the base and wire as the frame, they came up with some rather interesting work.

Final chance to see In Spirit, closing this Saturday.

Exhibition of work by contemporary Tasmanian artists Laura Gillam, Corinna Howell, Jacob Leary, Erin Linhart, Georgia Lucy, and Molly Turner

To be somewhere in spirit is to be there without physically being there. To show support from afar, or to haunt. Devonport is The City with Spirit.
As we wait and prepare for the arrival of the new Spirit of Tasmania this exhibition considers what it means to be present in absence and to believe, ecstatically, in spirits.

This exhibition invites six contemporary Tasmanian artists to respond to the emotional, spectral, political, or imagined connections they hold with place.
How do we continue to inhabit, support, or disrupt communities we may no longer physically occupy? And what presences remain after departure or emerge before arrival?

Create & Make Term 2 got off to a great start last week. Our young artists, with the added addition of some parents/carers, engaged in some experimental drawing. We had them drawing with eyes closed, contour drawing, creating continuous lines as a group and using various drawing mediums as they swapped and moved around the communal drawing paper. So much colour and movement.

These drawing exercises were designed to loosen up, play and just have fun with the materials. This week the communal drawing will be used as the basis for creating weird and wonderful sculptures with a focus on shapes and colours.
