📚💜 Reading Luma’s Light to lots of little people today! ✨🌊

I had the absolute joy of visiting a wonderful school today and reading Luma’s Light to five classes back-to-back! 🥰

We talked about the book and what it means to be an author and illustrator, shared our thoughts about whether we’ve ever felt afraid of the dark, guessed what kind of creature Luma might be, and had lots of wonderful questions and answers along the way.

And, of course… we read Luma’s Light together! 📖✨

Seeing all those little faces listening, wondering, laughing and joining in was such a special experience. There’s something pretty magical about reading a story you created to a room full of little people. 🥹💜

A very big thank you to Nixon Street Primary School and all the lovely teachers and students for making me feel so welcome.

A little dream of mine come true. ✨

🎨 Behind the scenes of creating Luma’s Light…

Before Luma became the little anglerfish you see on the cover, she went through quite a few changes. 🐠💜

There were sketches. Lots and lots of sketches. 😂

There were colour experiments, painted backgrounds, tiny details, things I loved… and things that definitely didn’t make it into the final book. 😅

And there was a LOT of personal debate over Luma’s colour.

I knew I didn’t want her to be overly bright or bold. I wanted her to feel soft, subtle, timid and delicate — so I tried different colours and different versions of her, never quite feeling like I’d found her.

I showed some of the different versions to my best friend, and she simply said:

“Purple is Luma.” 💜

And she was right.

There was just something about that soft purple that felt like her. It made her feel gentle and a little different, while still allowing her to stand out against the darkness of the deep ocean.

Then came all the other little details.

The pink speckles. ✨
Her glowing lure. 💡
The tiny lights drifting through the darkness.
And the little particles of sea snow floating through the water. 🌊

I wanted the deep ocean to feel dark and mysterious, but also beautiful and alive.

There were so many little decisions like these throughout the process — along with plenty of changes, mistakes and “hmmm… I don’t think that’s quite right” moments. 😂

So much of creating a picture book happens before the reader ever sees the finished page.

Every sketch, brushstroke, colour choice, tiny light and drifting speck eventually became part of Luma’s world.

Looking back at these early stages now, it’s pretty amazing to see how a little idea in my sketchbook slowly became a real book.

She started as an idea in my head, then a sketch on paper, then a very undecided collection of colours…

…and eventually, she found her purple. 💜🐠✨

🌊✨ Educational resources for Luma’s Light!

I’m so excited to finally share the little collection of free educational resources I’ve created to accompany Luma’s Light! 🐟💙

I wanted to create activities that were not only fun, but also encouraged children to read, create, think and explore the amazing world beneath the ocean. 🌊

The collection includes:

It’s been so special watching Luma’s Light grow from an idea in my sketchbook into a book and now a whole little world of activities for children to explore. 🥹✨

🧒💜 Who is Luma’s Light for?

Luma’s Light was created for little readers aged around 5–8, but honestly, I think Luma’s message can reach anyone who has ever felt a little afraid of the dark. 🌊🌙

At its heart, Luma’s story is about:

🌑 Fear — learning that the things we’re afraid of aren’t always as frightening as they seem. Luma specifically explores the fear of the dark.

✨ Courage — finding the courage to keep going, even when we feel uncertain.

💙 Friendship — discovering that sometimes the right friend can make even the darkest place feel a little brighter, and help us see things from a different perspective.

🌊 The unknown — exploring what lies beyond what feels familiar and safe.

🌟 Finding beauty in unexpected places — because the darkest places can sometimes hold the most beautiful surprises.

✨ Being different — because the things that make us different can be the very things that make us special.

I wanted Luma’s Light to be a gentle story that gives children something to relate to, something to give them courage and comfort, while also taking them on a little journey through the deep ocean. 🐠💜

And, of course, there are plenty of fascinating sea creatures along the way! 👀🐙🦑

My very first 20 copies of Luma’s Light arrived in the mail today and seeing them for the first time was a pretty surreal feeling. 🥹💜

I honestly can’t believe I’m saying this…

These are the first 20 books I ordered to sell myself, and they’ve ALL already found their new homes! 😭

So naturally, I ordered another 30…

…and they’re already sold too. 😂😭

Which means I now have to order ANOTHER batch. 🤯

WHAT IS HAPPENING?! 😂🥹 You guys are AMAZING!!!!

I genuinely never imagined I’d be sitting here, a few days after launch, ordering more and more copies of a book that started as a little idea in my sketchbook.
