Britten’s War Requiem begins with the eerie tolling of bells; it ends in a whisper. In between we hear the lyrical ghosts of young men and a fierce denunciation of war. It might be 65 years old, but this music still speaks powerfully today.

This extraordinary musical masterpiece of the 20th century only comes around every 15 years or so. Join us for this rare opportunity to hear the War Requiem at the Sydney Opera House with a 430-voice Festival Chorus, 110-voice Sydney Philharmonia Choir, treble voices from Conservatorium High School, star soloists and Sydney Youth Orchestras, conducted by Brett Weymark.

On a warm summer night, London’s annual classical music festival is a cheerful, inexpensive change of pace.

Well, our UK tour has come to an end, ending on a wonderful high note in Gloucester Cathedral at the world’s oldest continuing classical music festival – the Three Choirs Festival – where we sang our Faire is the Heaven program.

It’s been a whirlwind since the BBC Proms concert last weekend. Last Tuesday we performed at a function at Australia House in London. Then the 'Faire is the Heaven' Road Trip began, heading to Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, then to Oxford for the Oxford Festival of the Arts and then on to Gloucester for our final concert.

A highlight of our time in Oxford was a grand dinner in Hall at Christ Church College when the living legend composer Sir John Rutter made his way over from Cambridge to conduct us in his piece ‘God be in my Head’ as Grace, and congratulating the Choir (especially the tenors!) on a fantastic concert. The evening was capped off by a spectacular sunset over the Christ Church ‘Tom’ Quad.

Then on to Gloucester. Imagine the little local coffee shop opposite the Cathedral when swarms of Australian choristers clad in black arrived needing a morning coffee ahead of the 8:45 rehearsal! The concert itself was packed, with an audience of over 600 backed up by the brand new and enormously loud organ. The Australian works went down a storm with the very knowledgeable crowd, and the audience singing of the Old Hundredth at the end of the concert was hearty. There was massively enthusiastic applause, and the concert was done.

It’s been massive, tiring, but also an extremely rewarding and successful adventure. The weather has been stunning, the music has been sublime, and the memories will last a lifetime.

And... rest.

Postcard from UK Tour

Coventry Cathedral was a great official start to the UK tour (Thu 23 July) with SPC singing evensong at one of the UK’s great modern cathedrals. The Cathedral staff and clergy were incredibly welcoming, with a particularly thank you to SPC during the evensong service. Our ever-versatile Exec Director Matthew Beale lent his soaring tenor voice as cantor, and we were accompanied by organist Luke Mitchell, who will join us for the rest of the tour. Canon Nitano Muller gave us a fascinating talk about the history of Coventry Cathedral. Other choristers enjoyed seeing the floor mosaic representing Australia in the Chapel of Unity. Can you see the animals?

Last night (Sun 26 July) it was our BBC Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Maestro Kazuki Yamada led us, the City of Birmingham Chorus and Orchestra in John Adams’ Harmonium to a wonderful full hall.

Next stop? A choral workshop with the brilliant composer and ex-King’s Singer, Bob Chilcott. Then a private concert and reception at Australia House on Tuesday, and then on the road to Ely’s magnificent Cathedral in Cambridgeshire for the first of our Faire is the Heaven concerts on Wednesday.

Postcard from the UK Tour

Dear friends,

We’ve arrived in sunny England and having a marvellous time. We’re in Birmingham, busy rehearsing John Adams’ ‘Harmonium’ with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus and their Associate Director Julian Wilkins. Challenging stuff!

Rachel Maiden and Jenny Harry had these great 'Wild Nights' t-shirts made, quoting the toughest part of Harmonium, as a momento.

It all comes together this Sunday evening (7.30pm, 26 July, London time) when we’ll perform it at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. Tune in if you can!

But tonight we head down the road to Coventry's famous Cathedral to sing Evensong.

Hallelujah! Registrations for our Christmas Choir are now open – and you are invited to join!

Sing at the Sydney Opera House with literally hundreds of other choristers, a full orchestra and renowned soloists on the stage, singing Handel's sublime Messiah oratorio with its famous 'Hallelujah' chorus.

No auditions, and singers of every ability are welcome – from ‘never sung before’ to ‘can’t stop singing’. Everyone is welcome.

A wonderful send-off at our UK Tour preview concert – FAIRE IS THE HEAVEN – which filled St Andrew’s Cathedral last Sunday afternoon.

Brett and the choristers are now heading to the UK, starting with evensong at Coventry Cathedral (24 July) and rehearsals with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, CBSO Chorus and Maestro Kazuki Yamada ahead of their appearance at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall on 27 July.
