Thanking you for the opportunity to be part of this wonderful community and magazine. I’m extremely grateful and looking forward to creating more beautiful drawings in Darwin.

🎨 Meet Illustrator Jan Purcell

We discovered Jan Purcell’s incredible talent on social media and couldn’t wait to share her story! As the wife of an ADF member, Jan has combined her love of art with her passion for exploring the country, creating stunning, detailed pencil illustrations—from graphite to colour oil.

Jan’s journey started with a love of drawing from a young age, leading her to study interior architecture. Over time, her fascination with military badges, medals, and insignia grew into a unique artistic niche.

💡 Jan’s advice for aspiring artists: “Art cannot be forced. Keep pushing, keep practicing, and you will find that you’ve become an artist.”

✨ Why International Women’s Day matters to Jan: “It’s about recognising women who make the world a better place, those working in the background, and teaching our children the value of equality, strength, and compassion.”

Jan’s work has been featured in the New Zealand Army Journal and exhibited publicly, with most pieces commissioned.

📲 Follow her journey on Instagram & Facebook:
