We acknowledge the Larrakia people as the Traditional Owners of the Darwin region and pay our respects to Larrakia elders, both past and present. We are proud to be operating under 'The Indigenous Art Code' preserving and promoting ethical trade in Indigenous art. Our Authentic, Affordable Aboriginal Art is purchased ethically, direct from local indigenous men and women artist's right here in the

heart of Darwin in the Northern Territory. By buying locally it allows us to support, promote and offer a steady income to our skilled artists. We get asked time and time again “why are your prices so low, compared to others?”, our answer is simple, we practice fair-trade....this enables us to offer low, competitive prices and allows our customers to make socially conscious purchases. Also our prices stay the same all year round, no raising prices in the popular dry season. We are so fortunate to have such talented artists right here on our Darwin doorstep. The renowned Numina Sister’s, Lanita, Jacinta, Caroline, Sharon, Selina and Louise Numina Napananka and mother Barbara Pananka Price Mbitjana, Reggie Sultan, Kenny Reid, Les Huddleston are located right here in Darwin. We are also fortunate to have many other well-known artists dropping in when they are in Darwin to sell their paintings. To name a couple, Janet Nakamarra Long and Linda Bopirri. Sonda Turner Nampijmpa became quite the icon here in the city as she was regularly found sitting outside the Readback shop painting, drawing crowds to watch and to listen to her stories. Our artists are welcome to take up residence in a section of the gallery to paint. This is a unique experience to see them in action, talk to them about their paintings and culture; and take photos to capture the moment. Eddie Blitner is a regular here in the Readback Gallery. Amazing people with his swift brush strokes producing straight cross hatch lines in the traditional Arhem Land design known as Rarrk

All artwork is signed by the artist on the back of the painting and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity with a photo and information about the artist and the piece. We are conveniently located in the 'The Mall' located in the heart of Darwin on Smith Street. At street level is our second hand book store. Come on in and come upstairs to our air-conditioned gallery for a wide selection of traditional, contemporary and investment art. We like to think we have something for everyone! For our interstate and international customers, browse our website and feel free to email us if you do not see exactly what you want and we will happily send photos from our selection in the gallery. Some of our artists welcome commissions when a customer has particular colours or sizes required. Send us an email so we may discuss your needs further. Our friendly knowledgeable staff are happy to help with your questions, tell you the stories behind the paintings and assist with your art work selection.

Artist - Scott Duggie

Scott's Waterholes & Bush Medicine Leaves designs reflect two enduring themes found throughout the Utopia region. Waterholes represent places of life, movement, and gathering across the landscape, while the flowing bush medicine leaves speak to the plants that have long been used and valued by families across Country. Together, they create a story of connection to land, knowledge, and the natural resources that sustain life in the desert.

Art runs strongly through Scott's family. He is the son of renowned artist Selina Numina, one of the celebrated Numina sisters, and the grandson of artists Barbara Price Mbitjana and a Utopia elder whose connection to Country helped shape the stories carried through the family's artwork.

These latest pieces continue that artistic lineage, combining vibrant colour and movement with stories that remain deeply connected to the landscapes of Utopia. Each work offers a contemporary expression of Country while honouring the generations of artists who have come before him.

Territory Landscapes - Reggie Sultan

Born in Alice Springs and connected to the Barrow Creek region north of Alice Springs, Reggie is well known for capturing the landscapes of Central Australia through the tradition of the Hermannsburg watercolour movement. His paintings reflect the ranges, riverbeds, gums and open country that define the heart of the Territory, drawing inspiration from the country he grew up around and the stories passed down through his family.

What stands out about Reggie's work is its connection to place. These landscapes invite you into the country itself, showcasing the colours, light and natural formations of Central Australia. Through his paintings, Reggie shares his deep familiarity with the land, developed over a lifetime spent between Alice Springs, Barrow Creek and the surrounding bush.

Alongside his painting career, Reggie has also illustrated and written books that tell traditional Central Australian stories, further reflecting his commitment to sharing culture, history and life on Country through art.

We’re pleased to have a selection of works by Arnhem Land artist David Kenyon in the gallery.

While we don’t have a detailed biography on David, his paintings reflect many of the themes that have made Arnhem Land art so respected throughout Australia. Arnhem Land is home to some of the country’s oldest continuous artistic traditions, with stories connected to Country, waterways, animals, seasons, and ancestral knowledge being passed down through generations. The region is particularly renowned for its intricate cross-hatching techniques, often known as rarrk, and its strong connection to the natural environment.

From the floodplains and billabongs to the forests, escarpments and coastal country, Arnhem Land artists have long drawn inspiration from the landscapes around them, creating works that carry both cultural meaning and a deep sense of place.

David Kenyon’s pieces are a wonderful example of this enduring Arnhem Land tradition, bringing a little of the Northern Territory’s rich artistic heritage into the gallery. Come in and take a closer look at these beautifully presented works.

"This is the story of the Thorny Devil Lizard. The dots represent the thorny skin and the tracks the Lizard makes as it crosses the desert in search of food and water. The different colours reflect how the lizard changes its skin colour with the changing temperature of the sun and when under threat. Not only does the Thorny Devil Lizard make good eating, because of its spines, it makes an ideal hairbrush."

We're excited to introduce the work of Aileen Adamson, an emerging artist from Nyapari in the APY Lands of South Australia.

Aileen paints stories connected to Piltati Country and the Wanampi Tjukurpa, the story of two ancestral water snakes that travel through the landscape, shaping Country and connecting important sites along ancient songlines. Through flowing forms, bold colour, and intricate patterns, her paintings reflect the movement of water, sacred places, and the deep cultural knowledge that has been passed down through generations.

Drawing inspiration from her grandmother's Country and artistic legacy, Aileen's work carries a strong connection to land, story, and identity. Her paintings speak of the relationship between people and place, seasonal cycles, and the enduring pathways that continue to connect communities across the desert landscape.

We're pleased to be featuring two of Aileen's pieces, showcasing the vibrant storytelling and distinctive style that is quickly gaining attention from collectors and galleries alike.

Katrina Spencer’s Butterfly Dreaming represents the stages of the butterfly’s life cycle, from eggs through to caterpillar and chrysalis, shown together in one composition.

In nature, these stages occur separately, with eggs laid on leaves, the caterpillar developing, and the chrysalis forming before the butterfly emerges. This work brings those elements together to tell the full story in a single piece.

A clear and structured design that presents the cycle of transformation in visual form.
