Wangany Mala - NT Premiere with Special Guests!

We're excited to have this important film holding it's NT Premiere at Deckchair Cinema. Special guest Director Will McCallum is travelling to Darwin with special guests to present the film and meet the audience at a post film Q&A.

Hundreds of years before colonies were established on the Australian continent, people from across Indonesia had deep ties with First Nations people. Wangany Mala follows the journey of young Muslim woman Nirmala as she works on the construction of a traditional pinisi boat and learns to sail, all while navigating her faith and family expectations. Filmed over five years in collaboration with communities across Arnhem Land and Groote Eylandt, this documentary amplifies proud stories of connection between people, land and sea. Set to a multilayered soundtrack by experimental Melbourne composer Fia Fiell, the film features rarely seen photographs, artwork, and footage from the National Film and Sound Archive.

Screening in Yolŋu, English, Amamalya Ayakwa (Anindilyakwa, Groote Eylandt), Bahasa Indonesia, and Coastal Konjo (South Sulawesi) languages.

Come and watch the premiere screening of film “Wangany Mala” at Deckchair Cinema on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at 7 pm. There will also be a Q&A session with Will McCallum, the film’s director and producer, and A***n Pearson, Wangany Mala’s co-producer.

Wangany Mala tells the story of Hundreds of years before European colonies were established on the Australian continent, First Nations were part of a trading network that extended to China’s Qing Dynasty. Indonesian ‘Makassan’ fishing fleets harvested trepang (sea cucumber) for six months each year with the local Nations of northern Australia. By 1907, the trade was ended by colonial authorities.

This movie follows Nirmala’s journey in South Sulawesi as she works on constructing a traditional pinisi sailboat and discovers her region’s ongoing connections to Marege’—the Makassan name for Arnhem Land. Filmed over five years in collaboration with Anindilyakwa and Yolŋgu communities, this documentary is set to a soundtrack by experimental Melbourne composer Fia Fiell and features rarely seen footage, photographs, and artwork.

Para pelaut yang berlayar dari Makassar menuju perairan di wilayah Australia Utara, di Arnhem Land, bertujuan utama, yakni mencari teripang (Macknight, 1976). Campbell menuliskan dengan detail bahwa pada awal abad ke-19 ada sekitar 30 hingga 60 perahu para pencari teripang yang berlayar hingga ke Australia Utara yang mana masing-masing memuat sekitar 30 awak kapal. Dengan demikian, dapat dibayangkan bahwa ada sekitar 100 pelaut yang berlayar dari Pelabuhan Makassar untuk mencari teripang di Australia Utara pada masa itu. Para pelaut ini mengumpulkan sekitar 200 hingga 350 ton teripang kering di setiap musim.

Setelah seratusan tahun secara resmi para pencari teripang yang berangkat dari Makassar dilarang masuk, relasi itu terus berlanjut dalam berbagai bentuk, baik perayaan maupun pemaknaan dalam dunia seni dan kebudayaan.

Buku hadir sebagai bentuk dari pemaknaan baru tersebut yang ditulis oleh sepuluh penulis muda dalam menginterpretasi ulang hubungan Makassar - Marege yang sangat emosional itu.

Pembacaan atas hubungan antara negara dan warga melalui relasi orang tua dan anak dalam menjelajahi kondisi sehari-hari yang sungguh teratur, religius, aman, dan terkendali. Sebuah kondisi yang mengingatkan pada Orde Baru. Membayangkan sosok ayah sebagai negara, yang mengasuh dan mengatur urusan hidup sehari-hari seorang anak. Karya ini menjadi pembacaan ulang seniman terhadap relasi, jarak antara dua generasi yang berbeda, sekaligus menjelajah hubungan “order-disorder”, “to be or not to be”, serta “love-hate” melalui arsip keluarga serta memori masa kecil.

Hello ,

On 10 August 2024, attended the opening of Taripang, Dharripa, Trepang Exhibition 2024 at (Northern Centre for Contemporary Art) in Darwin.

The exhibition showcases works that revisit the people-to-people contact and cultural exchange between Makassar (Indonesia) seafarers and First Nation in the NT region through the commodity of sea cucumber.

In his speech, Bagus expressed his appreciation for the presence of works by several Indonesian artists in the exhibition, which aims to capture the Makassar people’s perspective on the journey to find Terripang and encounter First Nations culture.

This exhibition involves 22 First Nations artists and 4 Indonesian artists ( .karya , and will run from August 10, 2024 - October 5, 2024 at 3 Vimy Lane, Parap.

Our final day of UNTOLD Darwin talks will be held this Sunday in Parap and will deep dive into the exhibition "Taripang / Dharripa / Trepang" celebrating legacies shared between Aboriginal Australians and visiting Macassan seafarers.

Moderated by Leila Gurruwiwi and Petrit Abazi, with with Makassar artists Zaenal Beta and Abdi Karya .karya , Tiwi artists Michelle Pulatuwayu Woody Minnapinni and Colin Heenan-Puruntatameri of , and Don Nawurlany Christophersen.

Now in its third year, UNTOLD Darwin has become an important contributor to the First Nations-focussed activity that occurs in Darwin across the weekend of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards and Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair. This year’s program has been curated by Larrakia, Jingili and Anglo woman Coby Edgar.

Venue: UNTOLD Darwin 2024 will be held at 4 Bennett Street, Parliament House, except on Sunday 11th when it will be held in Parap.
