What an extraordinary night for Wuyal’s Journey and Netanela Mizrahi.

Darwin Symphony Orchestra is thrilled that Wuyal’s Journey, created by Rirratjingu songman Banula Marika and DSO Composer in Residence Netanela Mizrahi, has been named Production of the Year at the 2026 Northern Territory Performing Arts Awards .

Commissioned by DSO and premiered as part of our 2025 Darwin Festival concert Heaven and Earth, Wuyal’s Journey brought together Yolŋu story, song and orchestral music in a deeply special collaboration.

We are particularly grateful to Charles Darwin University, DSO’s First Nations Lead Partner, for its support of this important work, and to Darwin Festival for helping provide the platform for its premiere.

We also warmly acknowledge Jon Tooby, who conducted the premiere, and the wonderful DSO musicians who brought the work to life with such care and commitment.

We’re equally delighted to celebrate Netanela’s recognition with two further awards:

🏆 Behind the Scenes – Creative Award
🏆 Inspiring Educator

Huge congratulations to Banula, Netanela, Jon, our musicians and everyone who helped bring Wuyal’s Journey to life. We’re enormously proud to have been part of this remarkable work and delighted to see it recognised by the Northern Territory’s performing arts community.

THIS MONTH: Shakespeare & Symphony 🎭🎶

Shakespeare’s works have inspired some of the world’s most magnificent music, and this program celebrates that legacy with drama, beauty, and emotional depth. This co-production with Darwin theatre company, Brown’s Mart, brings together the richness of orchestral sound and the raw energy of live theatre – revealing why the Bard’s stories continue to move audiences across centuries.

Berlioz and Tchaikovsky explore the tragic romance of Romeo and Juliet, while the mischievous magic of Mendelssohn illuminates A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The program culminates with Darwin vocal ensemble Vocalective joining the orchestra for Vaughan Williams’ radiant Serenade to Music, which borrows lyrics from The Merchant of Venice.

Shakespeare’s words will be vividly brought to life by one of the Northern Territory’s most celebrated actors, Rob Collins and Ursula Yovich, weaving spoken performance through this program of masterworks, directed by Gail Evans with movement director, Balla Neba.

🎤 PRE-CONCERT TALK
Join us at 6:30pm in The Gallery for an exclusive pre-concert talk with Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Richard Mills AO and the Brown's Mart creative team. This relaxed discussion will provide insights into the evening's repertoire, themes, and the creative partnership between the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and Brown's Mart.

We would like to send our congratulations to the incredible organisations involved in 'Gene Tree: Listen. Now. Again.' for being named a finalist in the NT Performing Arts Awards Production of the Year category.

As part of Darwin Fringe festival this immersive journey lead by local young people in Darwin, guided a captivated audience through the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens and through music, movement, projection and storytelling asked ‘impossible questions’ about evolution, adaptation and hope.

We are so incredibly proud of all the local young artists from Corrugated Iron Youth Arts, Ludmilla Primary, and our very own Young Artist Program at the Darwin Symphony Orchestra who brought this magical performance to life.

We thank St Martins, Corrugated Iron and Darwin Fringe Festival for having us collaborate on this very special project. Wishing all the best to all the finalists who continue to make such vibrant and inspiring contributions to the Northern Territory’s creative scene!
