This year’s SALON des Refusés has some extraordinary barks like this stunning Buku-Larrnggay Mulka ochre painting by Djalinda Yunupiŋu.

Floating on the ocean’s surface like tiny blue stars, Yathiny (porpita porpita), anemone-like sea creatures feed the turtles that swim through the sacred waters of the Rirratjiŋu sea country at Yirrkala. These waters, shared with the Djambarrpuyŋu clan, hold deep ancestral meaning.

🌟 Djalinda captures this living history intertwined with ancient hunting stories through her signature star motifs. A powerful tribute to sea country and creation.

Come and see it in all its exquisite detail before SALON des Refusés closes for another year

Love having the strong, minimalist style of Marcus ‘Double O’ Camphoo Kemarre in the SALON des Refusés.

Deceptively simple, his artwork of grids and bands are always compelling - like warning symbols or flags.

You’ll find his bold work this year in the window of the new Outstation Gallery at the end of Wharf 2.

There is so much to see in this year’s SALON des Refusés - like the two powerful water dreaming paintings from Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation. In Tasha Nampijinpa Collins work we see interconnected soakages and wells while Sabrina Nangala Robertson’s unleashes a giant storm - both incredibly evocative and sharing important story, place and ceremony.

Drop by our pop-up at the Waterfront - near the Oyster Bar - to see these beauties first hand, or take a look online at the link below.

“I dance, I sing, I paint - this is my culture. It is in the land, in my hands, in my life. It is everything” - Betty Campbell.

Betty is a senior cultural leader in Mimili Community and this stunning work is ‘Minymaku Inma (Women’s Song).’ ‘Inma’ like ‘tjukurpa’ is a word with cultural depth that can be hard to fathom. Inma is dance, but it is also song. It is ceremony. It is then, but it is also now. Like moving water or clouds, like dance or song, like sand shifting over the ancient bones of story - this is ‘Minymaku Inma’.

And we have a winner!

Our heartfelt congratulations to Betty Mula on winning the SALON des Refusés People’s Choice Award 2024.

Hundreds of people voted and it was a very close competition but Betty’s exquisitely coloured depiction of the trees on her country took out the $2000 prize.

“My painting is about the many different trees I have grown up with. Each tree has its own story. The trees tell us many things: they tell us about the weather that’s coming, the weather that’s been, they show us where soakages and river beds are, they point us towards food. It's like my country's own language that I'm sharing in my painting.” - Betty Mula

Congratulations Betty ✨
