Mitchell Centre Darwin NT SISTER7 on Larrakia Country opened July, 2018. Thankyou
(226)

The concept of the gallery was the first Women's gallery in Darwin showcasing 7 professional Aboriginal female artists and to increase the amount that many Women were receiving for their amazing artwork as well as make the retail price much more fair. Permission to operate on Larrakia Country was sought and granted some months earlier and the name SISTER7 granted and given by Larrakia Elder June M

ills Gunluckiinimul to the new Women's only gallery in March 2018. SISTER7 has no intention to turn into a big gallery, just every intention to get better and better and remain ethical and respectful and contribute to Cultural maintenance in a lovely relaxed studio, inviting for female artists to come and paint and share their important stories or just drop by for fun. Owner Lucinda Watson is a non Indigenous, highly ethical and experienced Aboriginal art ethical retail specialist and human rights campaigner with sound ethics in practice at SISTER7 with a focus on amazing women and their life and stories as told through their ancestors and now their paintings for us to learn from and correctly documenting these sacred cultural stories accurately on certificates of authenticity. But most of all, supporting women, Great Grandmothers, Grandmothers, Mothers and kids where possible through art sales and other ways we can help supporting Mums with kids at school and making that as easier through their regular art sales, support networks and access to administrative things that not everyone is familiar with or has.

But the artists and their incredible talent is what keeps this little shop working, along with their support, encouragement and commitment which is priceless. SISTER7 shop gallery is situated at the Mitchell Centre, 55 Mitchell Street Darwin city. Very friendly always and kids MOST welcome here in the happy little space! SISTER7 is a signatory of the IartC - Indigenous Art Code ensuring fairness to all artists and all reproductions sold at SISTER7 are licensed & royalty compliant.

After giving birth, Aboriginal stockwomen returned droving the next day with their newborns in string bags or swaddles.

"Mum went up the Canning Stock Route. She had labour pains one night. I was born at Well 7 and she said, β€˜Gotta go on the horse tomorrow.’ Got straight back on the horse. I was in a little carrying bag so I could get some t***y "Lena Long, 2007 National Museum of Australia

The canning stock route:

"Once the stock route was in place it offered a corridor for Aboriginal people to move up and down the Country. There were far more Aboriginal than non Aboriginal stockmen on the route, and Aboriginal women became stockwomen or camp cooks. Aboriginal people became noted for their outstanding ability in stockwork, even though for most of their droving time they received no 'pay' for their work. Others followed their stock-droving families up and down the route as they moved from settlement to settlement, and from station to station where
the work was. In consequence, many families were dispersed widely throughout the Western Desert"

This photograph is also at Canning Stock route - it's of Mary and her baby taken in 1942. There's no other information available.
