The Other Side of Me translates into dance the true-life story of a young Aboriginal man, born in the 1960s in the Northern Territory, adopted by a white English family and raised in the English countryside. Drawing on a collection of personal letters and poems, it offers insights into the mind of a man struggling with his belonging from the other side of the world.

A story that returns across oceans.
Six years after its first development in Newcastle Upon Tyne, with Northumbria University, The Other Side of Me premieres in the United Kingdom this month.

Directed by Larrakia artist Gary Lang, the work traces a lived experience of the Stolen Generations through an intimate dance duet shaped by memory, separation and enduring connection between mothers and sons.

Developed between Australia and the UK, the work honours the real story at its core and the many lives shaped by these histories.

Made on Larrakia Country and developed across the United Kingdom, this landmark work carries the strength of community, Elders and ancestral story. Gary Lang brings his long grass ballet into powerful conversation as the work reflects family, memory and return across stage and Country.

We invite our community to share this tour and bring Stolen Generations survivors, Elders, and families to experience this work. It is a story for all of us, of loss, of love, and of coming home.

★★★★☆ “a confident, carefully crafted production - it invites audiences to witness an internal struggle rendered in muscle, breath and light. It may not hand you every answer, but it offers a space to sit with the important questions.” Weekend Notes
