Alex Clunies-Ross – Joy
mixed hardwood sculpture (including Darwin stringybark, Northern flame tree, mahogany), Kunos oil

Joy is an invitation to pause, touch, and remember what lifts the human spirit. Blending organic curves with deliberate linearity, the sculpture creates a quiet choreography: slender stalks sway with a gentle spring, while the finely finished native‑timber spheres can be lifted from their cradles and held in the hand. This tactile exchange is central to the work’s intention — a moment of presence, warmth, and play.

As viewers encounter the piece, their imagination completes it. Some see a lollipop, a cocoon, a balloon, a family — even something whimsical enough for Dr Seuss. Each interpretation becomes a mirror of what brings you joy.
In a world where heaviness often dominates, Joy stands as a small but deliberate act of resistance. It reminds us that choosing joy — noticing it, reaching for it, embodying it — is a sacred, defiant gesture that keeps the light alive.

Abigail Gurawiliwili Namundja – Freshwater Spirit Manburrba (cloth)

lino print on 100% silk dupion

This design represents my mother's dreaming. She was from Mumeka* and started printing at Babbarra Women's Centre in 2007. Her designs shared the ancestor beings and the ceremonial sites of her homeland, Mumeka. This Manburrba (cloth) has the Yawkyawk (young women mermaid) and Ngalyod (rainbow serpent) design by my mother. It has Buluwana (Kuninjku Spirit Woman) with a dilly bag on her head, holding a yam and digging stick. She is beside Ngalyod (rainbow serpent). Buluwana is a story from the Dhuwa moiety. The Manburrba (cloth) is also covered in Wayuk (waterlily) which are found in the billabongs. We eat the stem and seed.

*Mumeka is the name of a Kuninjku Outstation in West Arnhem Land.

June exhibition announcement! Cathy Hilder | Under the Sea

Join us for the opening night on Friday 12 June, 6–8pm, at Darwin Visual Arts, Ground floor, Harbour View Plaza, 1/8 McMinn St.

---

Under the Sea explores the colour, movement, and presence of marine life beneath the ocean surface. Working on black canvas, Cathy Hilder builds layers of luminous colour to capture the way light emerges in underwater environments. Each painting focuses on a different subject, from octopus and clownfish to coral formations and sea turtles, observing both detail and atmosphere.

The series moves between realism and imagination, including references to myth through the mermaid and traces of human history in the shipwreck. Together, the works present an immersive view of the underwater world, highlighting both its visual richness and quiet intensity.

June exhibition announcement! Jess Del Rosario | RejuveNature

Join us for the opening night on Friday 12 June, 6–8pm, at Darwin Visual Arts, Ground floor, Harbour View Plaza, 1/8 McMinn St.

---

RejuveNature captures the raw, informal healing power of nature. For the artist, this space became a sanctuary to slow down, trading the hustle and bustle of a busy life for a more positive and fulfilling path. By opening his eyes to simple wonders of nature, he found a deeper connection to his environment.

Nature does not demand perfection; it invites us to simply be, reminding us that we are just one part of a vast creation.
