When I first came to Darwin in 1998 I wondered whether anyone had a piano here ? Well 28 ! years on with many constant trips back and forth from Tassy I’ve somehow slotted into the town nicely and know where most of them are hiding and theres quite a few more than I originally thought !

With all the rain the Wet Season ,your piano may be struggling a bit , sticking keys ? Perhaps sounding a bit sideways ?! 🥲. Don’t stress I’m back up next week to deal with everything . Wave my fairy wand around and get Darwin pianos back on track for the 20 th year ! 200+ on my excel spreadsheet but I’m thinking some of these may have left town ? I rarely need to send reminders but it’s always good to give me a poke so you stay up on the list, so we keep it on track before my next exit .

Nice old Australian heritage Beale that I refelted and tuned ~4 years ago . It would have been their top model upright in its day . It’s going for free , only catch it’s upstairs but be positive ! Gravity in its favour . 4 sets of muscles, a sheet of formply cut lenght-ways ,some tie down straps and my piano trolley and oversea th operation . Slowly slowly .. Best move with a box trailer ( not a Ute ) . Can pm details of owner .

The pre back-to -school busy time , I get time for some repair work .The messy dusty jobs done outside between the rains . The finer assembly done in the surgery .
Also I’m succumbed finally to excel spreadsheet for client base management ( why havnt I earlier I say !!Marvellous ) and have logged in 185 pianos on my hand written records that Ive tuned in Darwin over the years not counting a bunch of school and church pianos . Not sure how many of these are still current but the trend is that a number of people come to Darwin , stay a few years and leave , often leaving the piano here . Over the last 20 years I get to discover the same instruments time and again popping up around town in different houses. Some get a visit from the moths mice and carpet beetle in between visits , others stay nice , the ones that get me in on a regular annual visit I must add .
Il try contacting all by txt to see who wants to stay on my list . The mission to keep all the pianos alive here in Darwin.

Wishing all my clients , all Darwin and Alice Springs piano -passionate people a happy and musical 2026 ! Learning an instrument is a challenge but a very rewarding one IF you put the practice in .Repairing all the neglected pianos I keep find lurking in houses or underneath ?! in the open ?! is my biggest challenge up here as you can see ..but somehow I get more satisfaction on saving these old beauties if I can , just as much as doing the fine work on a concert grand before a show .
Bugs , dirt, humidity all enemies for BOTH acoustic and digital pianos . At least the acoustic ones are repairable though . When the digital ones play up its often cheaper to buy another one 🥲..
So 2016 here we come . Book me before mid year because I’m planning a trip across the top to Queensland and then down south .

Happy Mango Monday ! Nice modern piano job done and nothing better than leaving with a bag of mangos .. my second build-up, learning to slow down a bit and spend more time in the ‘chiller ‘.Must get my piano in there , it’s the place to be this time of year !

Giving Darwin pianos the love they deserve . I do what is viably possible to keep them beautiful and still working . Some pics here of renos this year so far . .. I really don’t like sending pianos to the scrap -heap 😥.
Back up for the inevitable build up ..🥵.. Am I mad !?! Well it’s a good time to head to the chiller and enjoy music making . Make sure all those dehumidifiers are turned on !

New felt mutes to get me through 220 strings on the DEC Steinway . Ahh like wearing a new pair of shoes . An elderly Darwin client remembers when it was bought new over 40 years ago . The story was that the Chief Minister that time was an avid music lover and thought that Darwin needed a quality concert piano . This one was handpicked by the famous Australian pianist Roger Woodward . Its been used for the many wonderful performances that the DEC has hosted including this one last week by Dan Sultan and his band collaborating with Darwin DSO musicians .
Be so great .. wishfull thinking ?? if the present or next in line Chief Minister had the same passion to replace it with a brand new one! This one is getting old and pianos are unfortunately not like violins ! But it’s all we have for now . Thanks for everyone that support DEC performances and live music in Darwin
