Verge Gallery is a contemporary art space located on the campus of the University of Sydney, Australia, and is supported by the University of Sydney Union.

Verge Gallery at the University of Sydney is a public art space dedicated to the presentation of Contemporary art practice. Verge Gallery’s key focus is to present interdisciplinary exhibitions from leading and emerging arts practitioners while providing the University of Sydney students, academics and visitors an arena for critical dialogue and response. A space without borders, we encourage uniq

Experience the technological acoustics of a quantum science laboratory with 'lab material,' a sound work created for Todd Robinson's 'Materialnonmaterial' by tim newman.
"A little-known feature of an experimental lab like ours is their unique soundscape. I spend my days surrounded by the regular whirring and buzzing of vacuum pumps, the click-clack of relays, and the chirps of confirmation or denial from pieces of equipment responding to remote signals — all set against the rhythmic, pulsing backdrop of a pulse tube cooler.

This work captures some of the feeling of working in a lab: sounds wax and wane as you walk from setup to setup, as you open and close doors, walk through the service corridors, fill tanks of liquid nitrogen, and run experiments. Field recordings taken over the last six months...loop and play against each other, fading in and out, and never quite repeating."

A new body of work by Todd Robinson explores the relationship between art-making and experimental quantum science, drawing on a 12-month artist residency with the Quantum Integration Lab at the Sydney Nanoscience Institute.

Spanning multiple materials, sculptural and perceptual registers, 'Materialnonmaterial' foregrounds the entangled relations between bodies, technologies, and materials through which fragile, imperceptible phenomena become materially and sensorially felt.

As 'Dismantle / Assemble' by Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen and collaborators comes to a close, we are reflecting on a very special exhibition launch party back in April, which wove together food, art, and music!

Featured artist Jayanto Tan worked with Verge to curate a vibrant Southeast Asian food exchange, featuring delicious Filipino treats like silvanas and ube sweets, Indonesian and Malaysian Peranakan finger foods, comforting Chinese dishes and an array of Vietnamese snacks.

Guests were also treated to a generous performance by musicians from the Chinese Music Ensemble at Sydney Conservatorium of Music (), with a piece composed by Dr Nicholas Ng in response to themes of intergenerational cultural memory, diasporic experience and migrant communities in the exhibition.

Thank you to all who joined us for this festive and generous evening of conversation and exchange, and to Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen for bringing us together ❤️
