Perth’s incredible inventor and entertainer, Vince Austin, is hitting the road with the Steampunk Dalek. The ‘Steampunk Dalek Roadshow’ is a fun and educational incursion suitable for primary school levels: year 1 - year 6. The Steampunk Dalek is created from recycled materials including a couch, washing machine, lamps, household knick knacks, gopher, cutlery, plumbing and more. Standing over 2 metres tall, this moving and talking robot really has the wow factor. Vince controls, moves and entertains from the internal cockpit of the Steampunk Dalek. Vince first appeared in WA schools as funny man Professor Clear-Sphere from Bubblemania. Now Vince is touring with his Steampunk Dalek Roadshow wearing a green heart on his sleeve, delivering important messages such as: Look after our planet! Reduce! Reuse! EX-TER-MIN-ATE! EX-TER-MIN-ATE! Experiment and create a Dalek voice synthesizer. Get your hands on a cardboard tube, an elastic band and 3 different types of material. For example: aluminium foil; baking paper; tissue paper. Cut or tear out a 10cm square of each material. Experiment with each material by securing it over the end of the cardboard tube with the elastic band. Now attempt your best Dalek voice. Which material sounds the best? Try stretching each material with different tension. Does it make a difference if it is loose or tight?

Most of us know what a Dalek is but what is steampunk? Steampunk is inspired by steam-powered technology. It has an industrial and mechanical feel about it. Observe the brassy tones, golden hues and rustic textures on this close up of the Steampunk Dalek. This style of work combines the past and the present. The Steampunk Dalek started out as a school holiday project for Vince’s son which evolved into an extraordinary six month project. Vince explains that some of the Dalek components were from his collection of salvaged materials but the assembly of this incredible robot required keen hunting and collecting from kerbsides and salvage yards. Vince’s tip for embarking on a steampunk project would simply be: Start a collection today! Keep your eye out wherever you go for bits and pieces that you might use to create steampunk art pieces.
