You may have noticed over recent years that the nightlife in Sydney is pretty s**t. With all the lockouts and drink restrictions and curfews, venturing out to skip along the yellow brick road (formerly ‘The Golden Mile’) or any other area that is synonymous with Sydney night life has become more of a trip back in time (nagging mum voice): “Be home by 1am, don’t drink excessively”. e your teenage years, doesn’t it? You could even go so far as to say that going out in Sydney has become an embarrassing exercise. When you can’t get into your local because “you look drunk” (when you’re the designated driver), or you are entertaining guests from another country, you may often find yourself saying, “It used to be alright, let’s go home and play Cards Against Humanity, I’ll grab a bottle of wine… Oh, s**t the bottle-o shut at 10pm! F*ck you, Sydney!!!”
I am a positive person (believe it or not), and as I am a creative person I thought, “Why let the restrictions in Sydney get me down?... What did people do during the Depression and the War? They kept their hearts and minds entertained with pin-up models, dancers and vaudeville performers. With all the DJ, Drag and Burlesque scenes going on today, why not bring them together for one big party?”
This is what brought me to the notion of Classy as F*cK. Let’s listen to DJs providing body-moving beats, let’s be mesmerised by showgirls with glitzy, dark and wacky personas, and be excited by some of Sydney’s most talented drag performers. Let’s party in a judgement-free zone where you can wear and be whatever you want. Support local artists, party the night away and bring “Classy” back, but in a more f*cked up way. If the night is successful in March, we will see Classy as F*cK return every month at Oxford Art Factory, so bring as many friends as you can!
