We at Fingal have a pretty simple ideal, to bring Oscar Wilde to modern audiences ... to entertain, to make you laugh and have a bit of fun together. We want people to walk away from our shows saying, ‘Wow, that was a brilliant night out!’ and (if we don’t say so ourselves) we’ve been pretty successful in doing that to date. However, you should probably know that we have two very specific audienc
e segments in mind:
Audiences that don’t know Oscar Wilde’s work, and
Audiences that do. From our perspective, there is nothing as rewarding as being told on the same night by a live-show-first-timer and regular-theatre-goer-of-fifty-years that they both loved the show (and that’s happened several times). If you are familiar with Wilde then you know what you are in for (but we’ll put our unique twist on it). If not, well, pin your ears back for hilarity, searing wit and a whole lot of Wilde fun. Oscar Wilde was one of those outrageously talented individuals that the world is rarely blessed with. More importantly, he had a wicked sense of humour. Sometimes his writing feels more like stand-up comedy than theatre. Apart from just writing hilarious stories, Wilde also loved to ridicule (or as some might say, ‘take the p**s out of’) society. No one is safe but he particularly loved ripping into the class structure, especially the ruling classes. It’s an ethos we Aussies completely identify with and just adds to the irreverence and fun of the shows. In short, we’re doing this for love and laughter, fun and funny. We know you will love it.
‘I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.’ ~ Oscar Wilde
