Loved the generous play that emerged in our urban adventures! We played well together over two days, imagining an autonomous off-the-grid Poblenou in Barcelona 2050. In a neighbourhood of diverse residents including chefs and farmers, a huntress and witch, dog walker and businessman, scholars and educators, people free and retired, musicians and designers, and many more. Although there was one close call, we didnโ€™t lose hope along the way. Talking through regenerative urbanism with everyone at the end of each journey was a joyful and inspiring way to start a Visiting Fellowship in Barcelona. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒฟ

Reworlding City North
October 4-5
Naarm Melbourne

Weโ€™re taking over Cardigan Street for a weekend of urban play to reworld the neighbourhood. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒฟ

Step into the year 2050, where Naarm Melbourne has become a sprawling megacity grappling with climate crisis, social change, and evolving technologies. Cardigan Street is remapped via Boon Wurrung knowledge and language, transforming the street into an urban commons for learning with place.

In this urban LARP, climate fiction meets urban adventure at a street party.

Join factions, gather resources, solve puzzles, encounter characters, and work together on creative solutions to regenerate the city during a climate emergency. Reworlding is playful and imaginative, both speculative and deeply connected to place. It embraces climate action for collective change, do-it-together skills, and community building to ask the question: when one world collapses, how do we build a new world together?

Who will we be in 2050? Could Melbourne survive as a megacity?

Play to find out.

Join an urban role-playing game set on the streets of Naarm Melbourne in 2050. Artist and academic Troy Innocent leads your party through a two-and-a-half hour journey through the inner-city, working together to imagine a Naarm of the future. Along the way, take part in encounters with urban play that encompass augmented reality and immersive sound. At the end of your journey, share your stories together at narrm ngarggu Library.

Melbourne CBD North is the most densely populated area in Australia, with 31,100+ people per square kilometre, setting the scene for Naarm Melbourne in 2050 when the urban population is projected to reach 8 million, making it Australiaโ€™s first megacity. This is the third setting for this game, following Collingwood and Brisbane, that entangles people and place through imagination and play. The game design is informed by consultation with Indigenous Elders, urbanists, designers, artists, policymakers and game makers.

Reworlding is playful and imaginative, speculative and relational world-building that embraces actions for collective change, do-it-together skills and speculative design to answer the question: when one world collapses, how do we build the next?

Field of Play
Troy Innocent 2007

painted aluminium, custom luminaires, lasercut steel, shotblast pavers, multi-player digital game, computer-controlled light, four-channel sound

Play has become an integral part of almost every aspect of contemporary life. Field of Play is an urban art environment that transforms Digital Harbour into a zone for play. It consists of digital icons rendered in a range of materials that are integrated within the surrounding architecture and landscape. Central to the work are three iconographic languages inspired by electronic networks, digital games, and tribal cultures. They represent the communities that work and play within Digital Harbour.

After dark, a digital game generates patterns of light and sound via the illuminated icons in Harbour Lane. Inspired by the classic game of rock-paper-scissors (Janken), it may be played online or on site. Gameplay is based on interaction between the three sets of iconography - orange, blue and green. The game connects two different kinds of public space โ€“ the virtual space of the Internet and the real space of Digital Harbour.
