M@SM ARCHIVE #2
June-July-August 2017
Stephen Washington's 'Feeling the Manouche' with Clare O'Meara
Darryl Beaton & Fiona Boyes
As you can hear & see here no shortage of amazing talent across the widest possible artistic spectrum!
Every 2 weeks Alan & I ran a music event which I switched between Fridays & Saturdays. The feeling was we didn't want to 'flood' our audience which we presumed would only be locals to the Restaurant - I was aware that having no 'awareness' footprint in Sydney would mean a restricted audience, & short of spending $1000 upfront to certain rather popular Magazines (each) so they could do a "review" (!!),
I knew that getting attention to a wider audience would be trial & error.

This archive copied to our Youtube page

01/06/2022

I will be creating an archive here of every band I have a record of, probably month by month, & copied on our YOUTUBE channel shorturl.at/aqAR0

Starting here with ARCHIVE #1 -
Danny Tsun & Rick Melick for May 2017

We started off with a gig every 2 weeks which evolved very shortly

FAREWELL FROM ALAN & ADRIAN, MUSIC@ STREETMARKET

It is with great regret that Alan & I announce that
StreetMarket Asian Tapas Restaurant & Music@ StreetMarket,
has ceased trading.

It is safe to say there is no single cause for such events, & as everyone is aware the Hospitality industry - & the Arts specifically - have taken a hit both with COVID & from a political climate that devalues the performing Arts, going back the best part of a decade & certainly beyond.

State Governments that enacted business lockdowns, (outside of COVID) deliberate attacks on the future of Arts Education in this country over a number of years - examples of that which have collectively destroyed a business sector that used to be worth $11BILLION+ dollars nationally.

So much for 'oh my goodness, the Economy'.

The result is a public that has very little collective experience of Live Music in the past decade.

Alan & I would like to thank especially every musician that has performed in M@SM & are particularly proud that we could bring joy into people's lives through the live music & artistry that all the performers brought to M@SM.

For my part, I took this on personally as a way to try to put something back into the industry that had given me so much in my life - I was always fortunate & aware that having a full-time position as a performing orchestral musician is unique. I also wanted with this opportunity to create a space for musicians, & somehow help 'the Collective' in such trying times. I am of course distraught now for the bands that will lose their pre-booked gigs. For this I am sorry.

In my life I was also given so much musically - specifically the styles of music I learnt to play from my colleagues. As a career Principal violinist with Opera Australia, style & the types of sounds we make & the way we make them *is* the stuggle, is the Art.
Conceptually contemporary music is no different.

Having had the opportunity to successfully play in so many different styles - even before M@SM - & with so many different musicians is for me, something of a lifetime acheivement.

As it turns out I kept a pretty comprehensive record of events in M@SM, & have hours of footage - any band members wanting a copy of their performance archive please get in touch.
Please find here also in this post a video that represents the past 5 years.

Please find below - & applaud - the musicians & bands that have performed in Music@ StreetMarket, since
APRIL 2017.. more or less in order of appearence!
