The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at The University of Western Australia is a centre for exploring art and ideas across disciplines.

A sneak peek of Deanna Hitti’s work in progress, ‘K is for Kitab Tabakh (cookbook)’, ahead of her solo exhibition ‘Mezze’ opening at LWAG on 31 July.

Following her call out for donations, Deanna has been applying royal icing to assemblages of vintage crockery and serving ware during her artist residency at North Metro TAFE.

LWAG is seeking an Engagement Officer.

Play a key role in the successful delivery of public and academic programs at one of WA’s leading university art galleries. Develop highly desirable skills in audience development and community engagement to build a career in the arts sector.

• Part-time (0.4 FTE) appointment on a fixed term basis for until June 2028.
• Base salary: $83,212 (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation.

About the opportunity

• Support the planning and delivery of a dynamic program of public and academic engagement activities including talks, tours, lectures, workshops and events
• Coordinate community and student engagement initiatives that enhance access, participation and understanding of exhibitions and collections
• Contribute to strengthening the gallery’s visibility, impact and stakeholder relationships across the University and wider community

About you

• Relevant degree or equivalent experience in a gallery, museum, education or community setting
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences and stakeholders
• Excellent organisational and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
• Proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, academics, artists and community partners
• High level of digital literacy and experience supporting events, programs, and/or volunteers or interns

CALL OUT FOR ARTWORK INSTALLATION ITEMS!

Give your old crockery and serving ware a second lease of life as part of an artwork in LWAG's upcoming exhibition, Mezze, by Melbourne/Naarm based artist Deanna Hitti.

Mezze uses culinary traditions as a lens through which to explore what it means to be Australian, both historically and in the present day. Spanning installation and print media, the exhibition features a lavish banquet-style table setting and a monumental series of prints centred around the artist’s bicultural family home and her mother’s passing down of traditional Lebanese recipes in an attempt to preserve family traditions and language. Mezze invites visitors to reflect on how food culture and multiculturalism has shaped their own experiences.

Deanna is seeking donations of service ware such as old ornate crockery, vintage dinner sets, silverware, cutlery and glassware to incorporate into her artwork.

Items can be dropped off at Gallery Central, North Metropolitan TAFE between Mon-Fri 11am to 4pm from now until Mon 27 April (no plastic please).

Please note, donated items will not be returned.

Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery will be temporarily closed from 6 April to 31 July while the building's freight elevator is replaced.

The gallery will reopen with three exhibitions launching in the evening of Friday 31 July:

Mezze, a solo exhibition by Deanna Hitti that explores intercultural language and culinary traditions

Strange Sensation, works from the UWA Art Collection that unsettle our sense of the familiar

Held: On care and collections, with artist Michele Elliot responding to the Cruthers Collection of Women's Art.

The exhibitions will run from 11am - 4pm Tuesday to Saturday 1 August to 19 September, and entry is always free.

It was a privilege to host recent exhibitions Birrundudu Drawings and Gracie Greene – It’s Time!

Gallery visitors have engaged deeply with the stories behind Birrundudu Drawings and the opportunity to hear from artists, descendants, curators, researchers and community members connected to the project.

The recognition of Gracie Greene’s pioneering role in the Balgo art movement has been long overdue, and her exhibition has introduced new audiences to her considerable legacy.

Birrundudu Drawings and Gracie Greene – It’s Time! were part of the 2026 Perth Festival Visual Arts Program. Presented by the Berndt Museum and Cruthers Collection of Women's Art at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery with support from the Berndt Research Foundation, Warlayirti Artists and Mangkaja Arts.

Be sure to visit the gallery this coming week for your last chance to view our current exhibitions Birrundudu Drawings and Gracie Greene – It’s time! Closing Sat 4 April.

Curated by the Berndt Museum, Birrundudu Drawings features over 100 of 810 rarely seen drawings that were created by sixteen men at a remote cattle station with crayon on brown paper in 1945. Documenting their extensive knowledge of Country, ancestral creation, history, and ceremonies of the region, these drawings capture an extraordinary archive of cultural knowledge.

Gracie Greene – It’s time! celebrates the life and art of the late Balgo artist, Gracie Greene who was significant figure in the early development of the Balgo art movement. Greene’s unique paintings tell layered narratives of Country and her own story as a senior woman and champion of culture. Curated by Lynley Nargoordah, Mangkaja Arts, and Lee Kinsella, Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art.

Part of the 2026 Perth Festival Visual Arts Program. Presented by the Berndt Museum and Cruthers Collection of Women's Art at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery with support from the Berndt Research Foundation, Warlayirti Artists and Mangkaja Arts.

LWAG is open Tuesday – Saturday 11am – 4pm. Entry is free.
