Hello All,
This weekend’s 26th and 27th fish on sale are Neon Tetras (Paracheirodon innesi), small, colourful, and peaceful freshwater fish admired for their striking blue and red colours, active schooling behaviour, and excellent suitability for community aquariums.
Neon Tetras have a slender, streamlined body with a brilliant iridescent blue stripe running from the eye towards the tail, combined with a vivid red stripe extending along the rear portion of the body. Their bright colours stand out beautifully against plants and darker aquarium backgrounds, making them one of the most popular and recognisable small tropical aquarium fish.
Neon Tetras are peaceful, social schooling fish that should be kept in groups. A group of at least 6 to 10 is recommended, with larger groups providing more natural behaviour and creating a more impressive display. They are well suited to peaceful community aquariums and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish of similar size. They should not be housed with large or predatory fish that may view them as prey.
These fish are best kept in a mature, well-filtered aquarium with plenty of swimming space and areas of plants or other cover. Live plants, driftwood, and darker areas can help them feel secure and allow their colours to stand out. Neon Tetras generally thrive at temperatures around 24 to 28C and appreciate stable water conditions with good filtration and regular water changes.
Neon Tetras are omnivorous and readily accept a variety of suitably sized foods, including quality tropical flakes, micro pellets, and small frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp and daphnia. Feeding small amounts several times a day can be particularly beneficial for young fish, while care should be taken not to overfeed.
They are generally peaceful and relatively hardy when maintained in stable, clean water conditions. They usually do well in a pH of approximately 6.0–7.5, although stability is more important than maintaining an exact pH. Good water quality, adequate oxygenation, regular water changes, and a varied diet are important for maintaining their health and vibrant colours.
Neon Tetras can grow to approximately 3–4 cm in length. Their small size, brilliant colours, peaceful nature, active schooling behaviour, and compatibility with a wide range of community fish make them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
Neon Tetras are particularly attractive when kept in larger schools, where their natural schooling behaviour and brilliant blue and red colouring can really stand out in the aquarium.
