This week the preschoolers talked about the function of tree bark. They said it keeps the tree warm and is like sunscreen, so it doesn’t get sunburned. 🥰 We did learn that it is a tree’s version of the skin, a protective layer transporting nutrients and protecting it from disease. It is also a home to many tiny creatures. We did a lot of tree touching and hugging and thanked the trees for giving us oxygen. This was then explored through acrylics, texture paste, palette knife paint application and some wild painting techniques. When I grow up I want to be as good at painting as they are😀🙌

This was a really special workshop dedicated to the beauty of whales 🐋. We learned that whales and dolphins have spindle brain cells, found in humans and other great apes. These cells are responsible for empathy, building social connections, cultural transmission and tool usage.
Art inspiration came from the amazing photography and his book Giants.

We had to go there😀🎃 It wouldn’t be a Halloween without a skull workshop. The students of the Drawing Lab had a chance to explore this classic theme in clay and mixed-media drawing. We threw everything in, poscas, pastels, charcoal, inks and watercolours. I love how different everyone’s work is. 😍

Inspiration for the Slime Mold workshop came from Barry Webb and his amazing macro photography. Barry has an epic gallery of images on his website, showcasing the amazing variety of slime moulds. Most of them look like strange Sci-fi creations. In Australia alone, there are currently 260 identified species but that number grows annually. They can be found on decaying leaves and tree logs. Next time you go for a walk have a look around, you just might discover this incredible world, hidden in plain sight.

We started the term with a workshop inspired by the Slime Mold. Scientists have discovered that this non-neural organism actually thinks, learns and even forgets. It acts in such a clever way that scientists are using it to design complex, train system networks in Japan and are also using it in computer chips. NASA also used it to create an algorithm to map the cosmic web. One group of scientists even had slime mould play poker machines! To their surprise, Slime Old was very successful and was winning! The students were able to respond to the topic through sculpture, drawing and painting. Go slime mold!

I am excited to share with you an amazing virtual reality art experience, available to you this Saturday, as a part of the Culture Mix festival. I have been invited, as one of six artists to participate in a live event of making art using this technology, and you can participate too. You will be able to put on the headset and find yourself in a virtual world of your own choosing. Imagine making a drawing that you can walk around or through, be totally surrounded by. If you are free this Saturday, between 1-5pm, come to the Music Lounge at the Town Hall and have a go. I will be there from 3-4pm and other artists will be there through the day.
Hope to see you there!
