VENICE, ITALY 🇮🇹
With the Venice Biennale lighting up socials at the moment, I found myself revisiting these photos from a recce for the first time in years, reflecting on what this trip actually meant to me, beyond the project itself, which never quite found its way into the world.
In hindsight, Venice became this strange little pocket of beauty and stillness in the middle of everything else. At the time, I was deep in production of a huge show while also caring for our mum through treatment. It was quite the time.
Five days of wandering the labyrinth of laneways, photographing details, visiting exhibitions and hidden spaces, drinking espresso, getting completely lost, and briefly disappearing into another world for a little while.
Guided by my wonderful friend Lucia, we clocked around 30,000 steps a day crossing what felt like all 391 bridges, finishing each day with aperitivo and conversations about work, art and life.
The final photo was one I sent to Mum while I was there. She was always my biggest fan and loved telling people what I was up to. I think seeing me in Venice, her favourite place, doing something creative and exciting, gave her a little moment of peace too ❤️
Trips like this remind me that art gives us something important. New ways of seeing, moments of connection, perspective, beauty, and sometimes just a brief chance to breathe differently for a while.
Plus... I know all the spots (hit me up) and will always return to Venice and think of Mum and our chats whilst I shared my daily update...
