What a privilege to have been able to interpret and engage creatively with Gumbaynggirr country.
Have you seen the 'Reimagine Australia' promo on NITV. The new campaign resonates with many of our creative practices during The White Bluff Project. Below is a bunch of quotes from the NITV campaign and then at the end are words from local indigenous artist Tori Donnelly who was a wonderful, gentle and inspiring player in our project.
From NITV: “It’s time to reimagine Australia. Come on - learn about our country. About who we are. About truth in history.” Uncle Jack Charles

“Australia has the oldest, living, surviving, culture anywhere on Earth. That’s something that all of us need to be proud of. It’s time to listen to those stories.” Janice Petersen

“I love this country with all my heart. And I truly believe that if we are able to have that conversation... we as a community can thrive in a way that we have never known.” Osher Günsberg

“An honest looking Australia, for me, is one that acknowledges our true history. Our Indigenous history, over 60,000 years to celebrate.” Adam Goodes

“Australia is Aboriginal land. Indigenous history is Australian history. And it’s all of our histories.” Mi Kaisha
From Tori: "My inspiration comes mainly from trying to get underneath the story. Trying to get underneath the land to find where the connections are. In this area here, there are a lot of beginnings and endings of dreaming stories." Tori also explains how if you go out to White Bluff and then visit the exhibition you can make those connections yourself. See here interview on Facebook and Instagram pages. The image on this post is one of Tori's collaborative works with artist Ashleigh Frost.
All of us, together, can "have an honest conversation about this country’s past, and work towards a future fuelled by the vibrancy of cultures in Australia today, and underpinned by 60,000 years of tradition, resilience and strength of First Nations peoples and cultures." (NITV).

Other artists know this but, I just wanted to restate how much research and thought goes into a creative work whether it be an expressionist painting or a sculpture or a poem or a landscape piece. The back story is there, underpinning each piece. Like Sarah Mufford's codex and Jo Elliott's minute detail in each sculpture or Julie Nash's fine eye for precision and Ray Rixon's layering and layering and Terri Butterworth's intense examination of response and reaction and in Jeremy Sheehan, John Van Der Kolk and Mark Graham's centrepiece sculpture. The research is visible in this picture. Like all professionals, artists do nothing by halves. Winds, currents, migrations, it all lies somewhere in the work.
Exhibition closes this Saturday. If you've been already, go again, see what more you can discover. Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery .

The early workshops, gatherings on the headland in perfect weather, sharing our creative genres, cross pollination, organic building of relationships. Admit it....The White Bluff Project has changed us all - in either subtle or powerful ways.
Exhibition closes this Saturday, 15 January 2022.
