Congratulations to teacher Josh Jeremy and his talented music students…..hopefully some future Coffs Orchestra members there Josh.

Nine talented young musicians have earned coveted placements at the prestigious HICES (Heads of Independent Co-Educational Schools) Music Camp, against hundreds of applicants from across New South Wales.

Following a competitive application and video audition process involving students from 23 independent schools statewide, including top metropolitan schools such as International Grammar School, St Andrew’s Cathedral School, and The Scots College, the nine BDC students were selected across a wide range of vocal and instrumental ensembles.

The successful students heading to the August camp and finale performance at Sydney Town Hall are:

Finlay Hunton (Year 10) – Baritone (Male Vocal Ensemble)
Oliver Day (Year 9) – Baritone (Male Vocal Ensemble)
Joshua Wing (Year 8) – Clarinet (Symphonic Wind Ensemble)
Lucas Tai (Year 7) – Violin (String Orchestra)
Margot Lawlor (Year 6) – Violin 1 (String Ensemble)
Angela Li (Year 6) – Violin 2 (String Ensemble)
Theo Williams (Year 6) – Alto Voice (Vocal Ensemble)
Eido Roques (Year 6) – Oboe (Concert Band)

The students will travel south in August for intensive masterclasses and ensemble rehearsals with renowned conductors, culminating in a major concert at the historic Sydney Town Hall.

Woohoo…congratulations to our Sam Woolford. Our orchestra has played one of his earlier compositions, featured him as a piano soloist and we love having him join us in the violins when he is home for a visit. Very proud of you Sam !!

We have some exciting news: the DSO will be presenting compositions by students at the University of Tasmania’s Conservatory of Music, which have been inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.

The challenge was put forth to all students at the Hedberg to write a short composition inspired by Tchaikovsky’s 5th. The student compositions were then selected by our conductor (Jack Machin), their mentor (Maria Grenfell), and our president (Jennie MacDonald).

On Sunday the 20th of September, our concert, Tchaikovsky: Inspiration and Fate, will present the three selected works by Mandy Wisely, Evan Edrich and Sam Woolford. The concert starts at 2:30pm in the Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre on the Sandy Bay campus of UTas.

These works represent some of the first orchestrations that these composers have written and demonstrate personality fused with inspiration.

Tickets for these Tchaikovsky inspired compositions, as well as Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien and his 5th Symphony, can be booked here (or bought on the door):
