Mirusia is a Redlands local, she graduated with distinction from Griffith University’s Queensland Conservatorium and, at just 21, became the youngest-ever recipient of the Dame Joan Sutherland Opera Award. Soon after, she rose to international prominence as the star soprano with André Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra, performing before royalty, world leaders, and millions of concertgoers. Featured on more than 20 million records worldwide, Mirusia has achieved success both alongside Rieu and as a celebrated solo artist.

Meet Aunty Shirley Collins, the next of our special guests for Echoes of Home!

Aunty Shirley, who signs her artwork as Yumala, is a proud Aboriginal artist of Kalkadoon (Mount Isa) and Pitta Pitta (Boulia, Queensland) heritage, with strong ancestral ties through her grandmothers to the Northern Territory. Yumala, meaning ‘eldest sister’ in the Pitta Pitta language, reflects her role as a cultural mentor and knowledge sharer.

With over 30 years of professional arts practice, Shirley’s work is grounded in culture, healing, storytelling and community connection. After being placed in an orphanage from age five to fourteen, she later returned to Country where she reconnected with her father and learned cultural knowledge, bush life and bush tucker traditions which continue to inform her visual storytelling.

In her words, "My art is about honouring my Ancestors and keeping culture strong. I paint the journeys of my people, the strength of survival, and the healing that comes through culture and creativity. My work is about passing knowledge to the next generations and showing that art can be a pathway for identity, pride and healing."

Come long to Echoes of Home to enjoy the storytelling from Aunty Shirley alongside the Didgeridoo from Glenn Barry for a powerfull Dreamtime story put to music. Grab your tickets now so you don't miss out!
