Peridot Theatre: a leading community theatre company in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

Peridot Theatre Company is a non-professional theatre company operating in Melbourne, Australia. We perform full length plays and various One Act Plays including Drama, Comedy, Farce and lots more. The Company is based in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and is currently performing at the Clayton Community Centre Theatre, 9-15 Cooke St (Corner Clayton Rd), Clayton VIC 3168. It is a comfortable and intimate theatre, which accommodates just over 130 people.

Introducing the director of 'Love Letters', Steve McPhail.

Steve has over 50 productions to his credit, both as an actor and a director. He starred in 'The Architect' (2025) and this is the second time directing for Peridot - the first being for our 'Talking Heads' season in that same year. Pictured is Steve with his dog, Bayley.

A.R. Gurney
November 1, 1930 - June 13, 2017

A.R. Gurney, writer of ‘Love Letters’, was born in 1930 in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Williams College in 1952, served as an officer in the Navy, and afterwards attended the Yale School of Drama. For many years, he taught literature at M.I.T., but moved to New York in 1982 to devote more time to writing for the theatre.

He has won a number of awards during his career, and is now a member of the Theatre Hall of Fame and of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Gurney was married to his wife Molly for over sixty years. They had four children, and eight grandchildren.

'Love Letters' was first published in 1989. Directed by John Tillinger, it opened with Kathleen Turner and John Rubinstein on March 27, 1989, at the off-Broadway Promenade Theatre. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Announcing our second season for 2027, ‘Murder On The Nile’, by Agatha Christie, and directed for Peridot by Nicky Neville-Jones

Kay Ridgeway has led a charmed life. Blessed with beauty, enormous wealth, and a new husband, she embarks on a honeymoon voyage down the Nile. Fatal circumstances await when the idyllic surroundings are shattered by a shocking and brutal murder. Under scrutiny is a multitude of memorable passengers, all with a reason to kill. The tension and claustrophobia builds, as a shocking and audacious conspiracy is laid bare.

Announcing our first season for 2027, 'Calendar Girls', by Tim Firth, and directed for Peridot by Steve McPhail.

Set in the Yorkshire village of Knapeley, Calendar Girls tells the uplifting story of love, loss, and female solidarity. When Annie’s husband John tragically dies of leukemia, her dynamic best friend Chris decides to raise funds in his memory to replace the uncomfortable settee in the hospital's relatives' waiting room.

Rather than producing another routine WI calendar of local bridges and churches, Chris convinces Annie and their fellow Women's Institute members to pose discreetly n**e for an "Alternative WI Calendar". Artfully concealed behind traditional WI activities—such as baking, flower arranging, jam-making, and knitting—the group overcomes their initial bashfulness and pushes past the vocal objections of their rigid WI chairman, Marie.

What starts as a modest local campaign quickly turns into an extraordinary global media frenzy. As press attention, letters, and international recognition flood into their quiet village, the strong bonds of friendship between the women are put to the test as they learn to navigate grief, newfound fame, and self-acceptance.

'Calendar Girls' opens in late February next year.

It positions the season as an anthropological journey through how we express love, comparing traditional, quiet devotion with modern, rapid-fire chaos.

The fast-paced, contemporary dating gauntlet, capturing the frantic modern search for partnership.

Peridot Theatre would like to extend our deep gratitude to everyone involved in our production of 'Admissions'.

We farewell our cast of five, hoping that we will work with them in the not-too-distant future: Genya Mik, Archie Hughes, Catherine Christensen, Andrew McIver, and Sam Stone.
