Three Planning Decisions That Changed This Home
Sometimes the biggest transformation in a home does not come from finishes or furniture — it comes from small planning decisions made at exactly the right time.
In this project, a few early adjustments completely shifted how the home feels and functions day to day.
Here are three that made the difference:
• Kitchen island repositioning for flow, not just symmetry
Originally centred for visual balance, the island created uneven circulation paths — one tight, one overly generous.
By shifting it 400mm towards the window wall, the space immediately became more comfortable and intuitive, supporting a natural cooking workflow from fridge to prep to cooktop.
• Moving from flat lighting to layered lighting design
A standard layout of four downlights would have delivered function, but little atmosphere.
Introducing pendants, wall lighting, and concealed strip lighting allowed the room to adapt throughout the day — from bright and practical to soft and ambient.
• Power points aligned to real furniture placement
The original plan placed outlets on the “wrong” wall for how the bed was intended to sit.
By adjusting this before framing, the client avoided costly rework and ensured the bedroom layout supported how they actually live.
These are not dramatic design gestures — but they are the decisions that quietly define comfort.
At the planning stage, they cost nothing to change. After construction begins, they can cost thousands — and years of compromise.
If you are preparing for a build, this is where the real value of design thinking shows up.
