Councillors visited the World Theatre on Wednesday, 11 March to receive an update on the progress of repair and refurbishment works and to view preparations underway to support the building’s restoration.
Council staff guided Councillors through the site, outlining the damage that has occurred and the staged approach being taken to return the theatre to use. During the visit, Councillors were shown the proposed vision for the theatre’s internal refurbishment, providing a preview of how the refreshed interior will look once works are complete. Councillors expressed strong support for the long‑term future of the World Theatre as a key community asset.
Important construction milestones are now being reached. The roofing works contract was awarded earlier this month, with works expected to commence in the coming weeks. Planning is also underway for mould remediation works, which will be followed by internal painting and then the installation of new floor coverings as the refurbishment progresses.
Councillors also had the opportunity to test a sample of the new cinema seating. Following the positive feedback, the new chairs have now been ordered and will form part of the theatre’s renewed internal fit‑out.
While early works have focused on investigation, site preparation and planning, larger construction activities will ramp up this month. As works progress, there may be temporary changes to access around the World Theatre, including areas such as Rutherford Lane, to allow for contractors and equipment.
