Well, this is turning out to be a sad week …
We’ve lost another legend at 80, the irreplaceable, unforgettable Tim Curry.
A boy soprano, who went on to study acting, Curry started his career on the stage at the West End. It was there that he met Richard O’Brien, the creator of The Rocky Horror Show, and was cast as Frank-N-Furter in the musical theatre production. The play started its run in London in 1973, and Curry continued playing this character on stage until 1975 in London, L.A. and New York.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (TRHPS) film adaptation released in 1975, in the beginning without much attention, until cinemas ran it at midnight and it built momentum. In this time slot, the movie gained a cult following with patrons arriving in costume and shouting quotes from the film back at the screen.
During the 80s TRHPS grew in popularity, playing regularly in cinemas and became culturally mainstream, with the Time Warp a popular song at discos/parties for Gen X, as it is today.
Tim Curry had an incredible range as an actor, with some of his other most famous roles being that of Pennywise in the television production IT, film roles in Annie, Clue (perhaps our favourite role of his), Legend, The Hunt For Red October, Home Alone 2 and in Muppet Treasure Island as Long John Silver.
We’re blessed that his unique talent is immortalised through his work in the recording studio, on stage and on screen.
RIP Tim; as some may sing, you’re going home. 🎶
