Meet Sabrina-Rose Toby 👋

Sabrina-Rose is a proud Gangulu woman from Central Queensland who has called Townsville home for more than a decade.

Her creative practice began through family and has grown into a multidisciplinary career spanning visual art, community arts, exhibitions and regional arts development.

Still, We Hold – Exhibition by Sabrina-Rose Toby transforms familiar materials through weaving, colour and contemporary First Nations storytelling, exploring ideas of connection, memory, identity and what we carry forward.

Her work has been exhibited at Cairns Indigenous Art Fair and recognised through the Queensland Regional Art Awards, and this September Charters Towers audiences can experience her latest exhibition at Mike Carney Art Centre.

📅 12 September – 24 October 2026

We’re very excited about what’s coming next to Gallery 3.

Still, We Hold is a solo exhibition by Sabrina-Rose Toby exploring identity, belonging, survival, culture and Country through timber, raffia, drilling and weaving.

It’s been a wonderful year of exhibitions at MCAC. We’ve already welcomed From the Collection and Lisa Ashcroft, and our much loved Merry Mosaics and Ann Vardanega’s Wrapped in Nature are still currently open and this is next.

📅 12 September – 24 October 2026

Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing more of Sabrina’s process and the stories behind the work.

Help us choose our next MCAC Book Club read!

We’re looking for a book with a local or regional connection and ideally a living author whom we could invite to the Centre for a relaxed morning tea and conversation.

It could be fiction, history, memoir, poetry or something a little unexpected. Perhaps the author is from North Queensland, the story is set in our region, or the book explores themes connected to life in regional Australia.

What book would you recommend? Tell us the title and author in the comments and let us know why you think it would make a great Book Club choice.

Don’t be scared off by the work happening out the front, come around the back!

Our temporary entrance is via Marion Street, and coming in this way is actually more fun. You can see what is happening behind the scenes, enjoy our colourful back area and find a sunny spot to sit for a while.

Then come inside, where there is plenty to discover: two excellent exhibitions, new stock in our Gallery Shop, creative spaces and lots to see. Who knows what might catch your eye?

Follow the signs around to Marion Street—we would love to see you.

Open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am–2pm.

What did you see first?

At first glance, this work by Ann Vardanega appears to capture a peaceful lily pond. Look a little longer and you may see more.

Ann layers photographs to explore how we experience the natural world. There is always more to discover beyond the first glance.

Tell us in the comments: what did your eye find first?

And then

Come and see it in person as part of Wrapped in Nature | Ann Vardanega | Exhibition at the Mike Carney Arts Centre.

📍 96–98 Mosman Street, Charters Towers
🕙 Wednesday–Sunday | 10am–2pm
🎟️ Free entry
🚶 Entry via Marion Street during the awning works

A little piece of history has been uncovered...

As work continues on our awning upgrade, we've uncovered these beautiful original heritage arches that have been hidden behind the awning for many years. It's been exciting to watch a little more of the building's history emerge each day.

The project doesn't stop there. Thanks to funding through the Charters Towers Regional Council Grants Programme, our Lighting up Mosman Street – Heritage Beautification & Community Activation Project will soon help showcase these heritage features after dark, adding another chapter to the restoration of this beautiful building.

We're still open throughout the works, so don't let the fencing fool you. Simply pop around to our Marion Street entrance and come in to enjoy our current exhibitions, browse the Gallery Shop or just say hello.

We look forward to sharing more of the transformation as it happens.

Proudly supported by the Charters Towers Regional Council Community Grants Programme.
